In many ways <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time had come, and events were ripe for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> forma-<br />
ti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> larger and more comprehensive Uni<strong>on</strong>, which was not l<strong>on</strong>g in<br />
making itself a felt power in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g>s. The Rev. Robert Hamm<strong>on</strong>d<br />
Cott<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Liverpool, who had recently left <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Baptist Church, began his<br />
duties as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regular missi<strong>on</strong>ary for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> in March, 1868, and c<strong>on</strong>-<br />
tinued <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m until May, 1869, when he resigned, with a view to a settled<br />
pastorate. The Uni<strong>on</strong>'s earliest efforts were given to maintaining regular<br />
services at Alcester, Sp<strong>on</strong> Lane, and Walsall. By degrees o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r work<br />
was taken in hand for l<strong>on</strong>ger or shorter periods, with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> gratifying result<br />
that as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> years have passed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ' M.C.U.'-to use its familiar appela-<br />
ti<strong>on</strong>-has become <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recognised and trusted authority in its district for<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> promoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christianity in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> freedom which rejects<br />
subscripti<strong>on</strong> t~ any articles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ological belief.<br />
So far as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> funds at its disposal have allowed, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> has given<br />
yearly financial help to many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smaller c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s affiliated to it.<br />
Like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tract Society, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> generally has a united service anu<br />
a serm<strong>on</strong> by an appointed preacher, <strong>on</strong> its annual meeting day ; occasi<strong>on</strong>ally<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> administrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lord's Supper has also formed a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
day's proceedings.<br />

On M<strong>on</strong>day, g March, 1891, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> nlet for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time after its<br />
transformati<strong>on</strong> into a ' PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY,' <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se words having from<br />
that date formed part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its title. The Assembly as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n c<strong>on</strong>stituted,<br />
now c<strong>on</strong>sists <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> :-<br />
(a) The ministers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> affiliated <str<strong>on</strong>g>Churches</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />
(b) Three lay representatives from every affiliated Church,<br />
(c) Life members, being d<strong>on</strong>ors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> As, or upwards,<br />
(d) Annual subscribers,<br />
(e) Ministers resident in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Province, without active charge, duly elected<br />
by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> committee.<br />
There is now 110 doubt whatever as to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this move, which<br />
is apparent in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greatly increased attendances at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> annual and autumnal<br />
ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rings <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Assembly, and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> general interest manifested by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Province in its welfare,<br />
Prior to this change, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> annual meetings were held at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> various<br />
places iilcluded in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first in 1866 being in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Church <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Messiah, when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. John Gord<strong>on</strong> preached from Romans I., 14, I am<br />
debtor both to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Greehs, and , <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bnrbariatts, Both to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wise and to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
unwise. b<br />
The annual meetings, from 1891, have been held in Birmingham, its<br />
central positi<strong>on</strong> being found <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most c<strong>on</strong>venient for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> large majority<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> attendants.
