eputati<strong>on</strong>, which was due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> classical acquirements <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> master. Pupils<br />

were sent to it from distant parts. Am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m were relatives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dugald<br />

Stewart from Edinburgh, two s<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essor Milne from Glasgow, and<br />

many o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs who have obtained distincti<strong>on</strong> in after life. . . In 1843 Mr.<br />

Piper accepted an invitati<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Unitarian c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> at Banbury,<br />

whose beautiful chapel was built during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eleven years in which he ministered<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. The erecti<strong>on</strong> is mainly due to his exerti<strong>on</strong>s, associated<br />

with those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his s<strong>on</strong>-in-law, Mr. Edward Cobb. The last ten years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his<br />

active life were spent in calm and peaceful retirement. Slowly and serenely<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end approached ; he slumbered, his eyes closed, and he slumbered <strong>on</strong><br />

into death, at Hampstead, <strong>on</strong> 13 January, 1864.<br />

And here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> story <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this society is ended. The near neighbourhood<br />

has for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> author a deep pers<strong>on</strong>al interest, being <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scene <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r's<br />

first settled ministry, now more than half a century since. Few occasi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

stand out more prominently in his memory than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> remembrance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his<br />

walk from Banbury Cross to Blosham and Milt<strong>on</strong>, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>nce <strong>on</strong> to<br />

Oxford ; exploring <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> places where tvorship was carried <strong>on</strong> in those hamlets<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which his fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and Mrs. Edward Cobb are now<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last survivors.<br />

It would be to know where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christ-Church communi<strong>on</strong><br />

plate is, or tvhetlier it still exists-hidden away and forgotten in some chest<br />

or safe ? In 1891 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> secretary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>, in answer to an<br />

enquiry from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> author for particulars <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> it, replied, 1 exceea'i~zg& rzg~et to<br />
