The register <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> New Meting-house having been lost <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> society could<br />

not recover damages from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hundred; but, after much delay, obtained<br />

;G2,ooo from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government towards <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> erecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new building, which<br />

was opened July 22, 1802, to accommodate 1,200 pers<strong>on</strong>s. [The preacher<br />

was Thomas Belsham, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n minister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> New Gravel Pit, Hackney.] The strip<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> land in New Meeting Street, adjoining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meeting-house, was purchased<br />

in 1808, for a term <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 500 years, for ;G400 ; here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school buildings were<br />

subsequently erected. Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> desiring<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> place <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> worship and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> schools to be removed nearer Edgbast<strong>on</strong>,<br />

several meetings were held in 1857 and 1858 to decide up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject, and<br />

in this latter year, <strong>on</strong> October 12, at a meeting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seat-renting members,<br />

held at twelve o'clock at no<strong>on</strong>, it was determined that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chapel and schools<br />

should be removed to Broad Street. By a vgry small majority <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> resolu-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> was cawied :--That <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trustees be 1-eyztestect to taLe such ?/zeasures for dis-<br />

posing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> prtsent chapel, schools, and property in Nc'w Meetins Street as may<br />

The New Meeting-house was privately sold to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Roman Catholic c<strong>on</strong>gre-<br />

gati<strong>on</strong> [St. Michael's] in or about August, 1861, for 63,500, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last<br />

unitarian service was c<strong>on</strong>ducted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re <strong>on</strong> Sunday, December 29, 1861. The<br />

site in Broad Street c<strong>on</strong>sists in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> right <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> building over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> canal at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

corner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> St. Peter's Place, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re an elegant Gothic church and school-<br />

rooms have been built, which were duly opened <strong>on</strong> New Year's Day, 1862,<br />

[The preacher was Thomas Madge] under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name, ' Church <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Messiah.'<br />

To this building <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> memorial tablets <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Priestley and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs have been<br />

removed.<br />

to God <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r al<strong>on</strong>e ; h<strong>on</strong>ouring, but not worshipping His S<strong>on</strong>, Jesus<br />

Christ, by acknowledging that through Him <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y have access to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r.<br />

Desirous <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> maintaining inviolate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian liberty which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves<br />

enjoy, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> transmitting it unimpaired to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir descendants, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y leave<br />

this House <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> IVorship free and unfettered. Avowing and exercising <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />

own distinct pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> belief, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y prescribe no pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong> whatever for.<br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, but have faith in truth, and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> God <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> truth, that if His Word<br />

have free course it will be glorified.<br />

The cost was about L12,ooo; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> architect being Mr. J. J. Bateman,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Birmingham.<br />

Mr. Bache founded his last serm<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> New Meeting-house, Moor<br />

Street, <strong>on</strong> Sunday evening, 29 December, 1861, <strong>on</strong> St. John X., 16-<br />

And o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r sheep I have, which are not <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this fold: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n1 also I must briny,<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y shall hear My voice ; and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re shail be <strong>on</strong>e flock and <strong>on</strong>e shepherd ;<br />

from which he insisted <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian unity, as founded <strong>on</strong><br />

principles and spirit, a& not <strong>on</strong> opini<strong>on</strong> ; and in reference to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> New<br />

Meeting-house being about to pass into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Roman Catholics,<br />

read Dr. Priestley's dedicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last treatise <strong>on</strong> which he was en-<br />

gaged, viz. :-<br />
