Court <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lord <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> manor in 1659, and this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its<br />

written history. Subsequent surrenders took place at each renewal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

body <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trustees. Dr. Nash, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> historian <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Worcestershire, says <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bishop<br />

Lloyd, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seven bishops committed by James II., and who held <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

See from 1699 to 1717, that he ousted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dissenters from this Chapel, and<br />

notwithstanding <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pretence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its standing <strong>on</strong> copyliold ground, c<strong>on</strong>secrated<br />

both Chapel and Cemetery. The present meeting-house n7as, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore, a<br />

substitute for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chapel 'from which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> had be'en ejected.<br />

The building was erected <strong>on</strong> land given in 1708 by John Turt<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Brades. In 1715, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tory mob, which had set <strong>on</strong> fire <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting,<br />

Birmingham, and destroyed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chapel at West Bromnrich, came to Oldbury,<br />

and set fire to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> minister was preaching. The amount<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> damage d<strong>on</strong>e is now unknown. In 1806, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. William Procter was<br />

instrumental in getting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting-house rebuilt at a cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> about E3oo.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> must have been very small as those resident in Oidbury<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly c<strong>on</strong>tributed AI~. One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subscribers is still represented by three<br />

generati<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Dr. Toulmin preached at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reopening, <strong>on</strong> Sunday, 12 July, 1807, his<br />

text being I Chr<strong>on</strong>icles, xxix., g :-<br />

Then <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people rejoiced, for that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered ~.villingly, because with perfect<br />

heart <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered willingly to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lord : and David, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> King, also rejoiced<br />

with great joy.<br />

In 1862, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building was remodelled and refitted at a cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Egoo ; and<br />

last year [1889] fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r alterati<strong>on</strong>s were effected at a cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ;Gzoo. The<br />

walls are, however, chiefly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> walls <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1806, and a small porti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

original fabric <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1708 still remains. The lectern and c<strong>on</strong>~n~uni<strong>on</strong> table are<br />

made <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> oak, which formed part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pews <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first building, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pulpit is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same that was used in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d.<br />

From a short article in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian Freer;lta?z: 1870, p. 13'7, which also<br />

gives an engraving <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> premises, we ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r that in 1728 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trustees<br />

came into possessi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5% acres <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> land near Oldbury, devised two years<br />

before by John Price, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Halesowen, for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> poor, and fur support-<br />

ing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> minister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting-house. In 1784 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building was purchased<br />

in which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> free school was begun three or four years previously ; also,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cottage and land adjoining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting-house, but how <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> funds (,Gr40)<br />

were obtained is not stated. In 1790, five acres more came to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trustees<br />

for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> poor from <strong>on</strong>e Richard Nock, but whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r by gift or<br />

purchase is not known. In 1817, Henry Hunt, Esquire, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> The Brades,<br />

handed over to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trustees <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house and garden adjoining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school,<br />

purchased by his fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> minister.
