having over many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pews brass plates, c<strong>on</strong>taining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> names <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pers<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and families who are buried <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re." This sentence, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> testim<strong>on</strong>y<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an old worshipper in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> place, led to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> author finding <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

brasses behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present woodwork <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> walls <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> old building,<br />

now, and for many years past, used as a school-house.<br />

Augustus J. C. Hare,* in his charming work <strong>on</strong> " Shropshire," 1898,<br />

p. 205, says :-<br />

Doddingt<strong>on</strong> is part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> parish <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Whitchurch. Here, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Church <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Saviour, are no less than 23 brasses, removed from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Presbyterian<br />

Chapel, in which Divine worship ceased in 1844. They represent 41 lives<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> old Salopian families <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Beny<strong>on</strong>, Collyer, Edwhds, Gentleman, Holt,<br />

Clay, and Yate, and cover a period <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 164 years, from 1672 to 1836. The<br />

Beny<strong>on</strong> brasses are I729 and 1746 ;. that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebenezer Keay and his wife,<br />

1779, 1776 ; those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1755, 1825 and 1832 bear <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Edwards; that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Robert Gentleman is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1757 ; <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lydia Collyer, 1744; <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> John Holt, 1781.<br />

All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> brasses are small, but most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m bear coats <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> arms.<br />

Five articles dealing with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this <strong>on</strong>ce numerous and in-<br />

fluential society were c<strong>on</strong>tributed to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Seedsower, 1894, var. pp.<br />

The registers, stored in Somerset House, are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> much interest. The<br />

first two are thin quarto books in paper covers, not ruled for entries, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

writing faded and indistinct.<br />

"Author <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> '' Memorials <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Quiet Life," "Walks in Rome," &c.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trgstees, and are fragmentary. This is very evident, as between 1724<br />

and 1743 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are no entries ; this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> period nearly covered by Colt-<br />

hurst's ministry.<br />

In two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> earliest entries glimpses are afforded <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Ralph<br />
