PHOENIX ISLANDS PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT PLAN
Chapter III. Background, 4. Marine Resources
Draft 1 March 2007
Bunker (1951) reported observing very little marine plant life. Most of the reef area was
covered with microscopic algae. In the shallow bay areas, there was thick growth of
filamentous green algae.
Luomala (1951) identified one species of brown seaweed (Fucaceae) from Abariringa
(Canton), Turbinaria ornata.
Degener and Gillaspy (1955) reported on the various species of marine algae present on
Abariringa (Canton).
1) Ulvaceae - Enteromorpha sp., Ulva lactuca?
2) Cladophoraceae - Cladophora sp., Cladophoroposis menbranacea
3) Caulerpaceae - Caulerpa crassifolia, Caulerpa peltata, Calerpa serrulata
4) Valoniaceae – Dictyosphaeria cavernosa, Valonia sp.
5) Fucaceae - Turbinaria ornata
6) Gelidiaceae – Gelidium sp.
10) Ceramiaceae - Centroceras clavulatum, Ceramium sp.
11) Grateloupiaceae - Halymenia sp.
12) Corallinaceae - Jania capillacea, Lithothamion sp.
Degener and Gillaspy (1955) noted that the diatoms, Navicula sp. was collected on
Abariringa (Canton).
Green, brown, and red marine algae from Abariringa (Canton) were examined by Dawson
(1959). The following species were examined and discussed in detail. According to Dawson
(1959), the discussion on Polysiphonia was provided by Dr. G.J. Hollenberg.
