THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

enough to set out a tea-service on and nse tiiem for a table. When <strong>the</strong>y<br />

want to bid good-bye, <strong>the</strong>y say ' Sayonara,' just as we say ' Good-bye,'<br />

and it means exactly <strong>the</strong> same th<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>y are not satisfied with one<br />

bow, but keep on several times, until you beg<strong>in</strong> to wonder when <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

get thi'ough. Everybody says <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> politest people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

and I can readily believe it if what I have seen is a fair sanjple.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>re have been several men around <strong>the</strong> hotel try<strong>in</strong>g to sell th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

to us, and we have been look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong>m. One th<strong>in</strong>g I am go<strong>in</strong>g to get<br />

and send <strong>in</strong> this letter is a box <strong>of</strong> Japanese pictures. <strong>The</strong>y are not photo-<br />

graphs, but real draw<strong>in</strong>gs by Japanese artists, and pr<strong>in</strong>ted on Japanese<br />

paper. You will see how s<strong>of</strong>t and nice <strong>the</strong> paper is ; and<br />

though <strong>the</strong> pict-<br />

ures look rough, <strong>the</strong>y are very good, and, above all th<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>y are truth-<br />

ful. I am go<strong>in</strong>g to get as many different ones as I can, and so I th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

you will be al)lo to get a good idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country as <strong>the</strong> natives see it<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. <strong>The</strong>y have <strong>the</strong>se pictures show<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong>ir ways <strong>of</strong> life—how<br />

<strong>the</strong>y cook <strong>the</strong>ir food, how <strong>the</strong>y eat it, how <strong>the</strong>y work, how <strong>the</strong>y play—<strong>in</strong><br />

fact, how everyth<strong>in</strong>g is done <strong>in</strong> this very curious country. <strong>The</strong> Japanese<br />

make <strong>the</strong>ir draw<strong>in</strong>gs with very few l<strong>in</strong>es, and it will astonish you to see<br />

how much <strong>the</strong>y can express with a few strokes <strong>of</strong> a pencil. Here is a<br />
