As <strong>the</strong> ship went on, <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> grew more and more dist<strong>in</strong>ct, and<br />

by-and-by o<strong>the</strong>r features <strong>of</strong> Japanese scenery were brought <strong>in</strong>to view.<br />

<strong>The</strong> western horizon became a serrated l<strong>in</strong>e, that formed an agreeable con-<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> night <strong>the</strong>y passed Cape K<strong>in</strong>g and entered Yeddo bay.<br />

<strong>The</strong> great lightdiouse that watches <strong>the</strong> entrance shot its rays far out over<br />

<strong>the</strong> waters and beamed a k<strong>in</strong>dly welcome to <strong>the</strong> strangers. Slowly <strong>the</strong>y<br />

steamed onward, keep<strong>in</strong>g a careful lookout for <strong>the</strong> numerous boats and<br />

junks that abound <strong>the</strong>re, and watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hundreds <strong>of</strong> lights that gleamed<br />

along <strong>the</strong> shore and dotted <strong>the</strong> slop<strong>in</strong>g hill -sides. Sixty miles from<br />
