AN ESSAY ON JAPANESE RELIGIONS. 145<br />

" <strong>The</strong> difEereiicc," Doctor Bronson expla<strong>in</strong>ed, " is about <strong>the</strong> same as<br />

that between tlio Ilo<strong>in</strong>an Catholic faith and that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestants. As<br />

I xmderstand it—but I confess that I am not quite clear on <strong>the</strong> subject<br />

Sh<strong>in</strong>toism is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a reforma-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buddhist religion, just as<br />

our Protestant belief is a reforma-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> Catliolicism.<br />

" Kow, if 3'ou want to study<br />

Buddhism," he cont<strong>in</strong>ued, " I luust<br />

refer you to a work on <strong>the</strong> relig-<br />

ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, or to an encyclo-<br />

pedia, as we have no time to go <strong>in</strong>to<br />

a religious dissertation, and, besides,<br />

our lunch might be spoiled while we<br />

were talk<strong>in</strong>g. And ano<strong>the</strong>r reason<br />

why we ought not to enter deeply<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> subject is that I should f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

it impossible to make a clear exposi-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bud-<br />

dhist faith or <strong>of</strong> Sh<strong>in</strong>toism ; and if<br />

you pressed me too closely, I might<br />

Ijecome confused. <strong>The</strong> religions <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>East</strong> are very difficult to com-<br />

prehend, and I have known men who had lived twenty years <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

or India, and endeavored to study <strong>the</strong> forms and pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relig-<br />

ions <strong>of</strong> those countries, who t-onfessed <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>ability to understand <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

For my own part, I must admit that when I have listened to explanations<br />

by Japanese, or o<strong>the</strong>r people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>East</strong>, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir religious faith, I have<br />

lieard a great deal that I could not comprehend. I concede <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>in</strong>ceri-<br />

ty ; and when <strong>the</strong>y say .<strong>the</strong>re is a great deal <strong>in</strong> our forms <strong>of</strong> worship that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y do not understand, I believe <strong>the</strong>y are tell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> truth. Uur ways <strong>of</strong><br />

thought are not <strong>the</strong>ir ways, and what is clear to one is not at all so to an-<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

" I have already told yoir <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> overthrow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shogoon, or Tycoon,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mikado to power as <strong>the</strong> ruler <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> country.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Shogoon and his family were adherents <strong>of</strong> Buddhism, while <strong>the</strong> ]\[ika-<br />

do's followers were largel}' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sh<strong>in</strong>to faith. When <strong>the</strong> Mikado's pow-<br />

er was restored, <strong>the</strong>re was a general demand on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sli<strong>in</strong>toists<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Buddhist temples should be destroyed and <strong>the</strong> religion effaced.<br />

A good number <strong>of</strong> temples were demolished, and <strong>the</strong> government took<br />
