and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>atres <strong>the</strong> musicians form a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chorus. A good deal<br />

<strong>of</strong> tlie play is expla<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> chorus ; and if <strong>the</strong>re are any obscure po<strong>in</strong>ts,<br />

<strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g goes on sometimes while <strong>the</strong> actors are on <strong>the</strong> stage, and we<br />

got tired <strong>of</strong> it <strong>in</strong> a little while. I don't suppose <strong>the</strong> Japanese get so tired<br />

<strong>of</strong> it, or <strong>the</strong>y would stop hav<strong>in</strong>g it. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m admit that it would<br />

be better to have <strong>the</strong> orchestra <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stage, as we do; but o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

say that so long as <strong>the</strong> chorus must do so much towards expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

play, tliey had better rema<strong>in</strong> where <strong>the</strong>y are. <strong>The</strong> Japanese seem to like<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>atre as it is, and <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>y will not be apt to change <strong>in</strong> a<br />

" Just after <strong>the</strong> curta<strong>in</strong> was pulled away, <strong>the</strong>y opened a door <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> garden, and <strong>the</strong> actors who were to be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> play came <strong>in</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y sat down on <strong>the</strong> stage and began a song, which <strong>the</strong>y kept up for ten<br />

or fifteen m<strong>in</strong>utes, each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g a piart that was evidently prepared<br />

for himself alone. <strong>The</strong> music <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> little boxes jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>m, and it made<br />

me th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> negro m<strong>in</strong>strels <strong>in</strong> a concert hall at home, where <strong>the</strong>y all<br />

come on toge<strong>the</strong>r. After <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>ished this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> performance, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was a pantomime by a woman, or ra<strong>the</strong>r by a man disguised as a woman,<br />

as all <strong>the</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g is done by men. <strong>The</strong>y get <strong>the</strong>mselves up perfectly, as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have very little beards, and <strong>the</strong>y can imitate <strong>the</strong> voice and move-<br />

ments <strong>of</strong> a woman, so that nobody can tell <strong>the</strong> difference. I couldn't<br />

tell what <strong>the</strong> pantomime was all about, and it was so long that I got tired<br />

<strong>of</strong> it before <strong>the</strong>y were through, and wondered when <strong>the</strong>y would come on<br />

with someth<strong>in</strong>g else.
