with <strong>the</strong> baggage animals. <strong>The</strong> grooms had all <strong>the</strong>y wished to attend to<br />

to keep <strong>the</strong> beasts under subjection, and not <strong>in</strong>frequently <strong>the</strong>y came out<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contest with gashes and o<strong>the</strong>r blemishes ou <strong>the</strong>ir variegated sk<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>y showed great courage <strong>in</strong> contend<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> vicious brutes, and<br />

it is said <strong>of</strong> a Japanese betto that he will fearlessly attack <strong>the</strong> most ill-tem-<br />

pered horse <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, and not be satisfied till he has conquered him.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are several populous towns between Hakone and <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong><br />

Fusiyama. Among <strong>the</strong>m may be .mentioned Missimi, Noomads, and<br />

Harra, none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g any features <strong>of</strong> special importance after<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r places our friends had seen. Consecjnently our party did not<br />

halt <strong>the</strong>re any longer than was necessary for <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary demands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

journey, but puslied on to <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ilolj' Peak. As <strong>the</strong>y ap-<br />

proached it tliey met many pilgrims return<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> ascent, and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

general ajipearance <strong>of</strong> fatigue did not hold out a cheer<strong>in</strong>g prospect to <strong>the</strong><br />

excursionists. But <strong>the</strong>y had come with <strong>the</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>ation to make <strong>the</strong><br />

journey to <strong>the</strong> summit <strong>of</strong> tlie mounta<strong>in</strong>, and were not to be fi'ightened at<br />

trifles. <strong>The</strong>y were full <strong>of</strong> enthusiasm, for <strong>the</strong> great mounta<strong>in</strong> showed<br />

more dist<strong>in</strong>ctly every hour as <strong>the</strong>j approached it, and its enormous and<br />

symmetrical cone was pushed far up <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sky, and literally pierced <strong>the</strong><br />

clouds. At times tlie clouds blew away; tlie sunlight streauied full upon<br />

tlie l<strong>of</strong>ty mass <strong>of</strong> ever-dur<strong>in</strong>g stone, and seemed to warm it <strong>in</strong>to a tropical<br />

lieat. But <strong>the</strong> snow ly<strong>in</strong>g unmelted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rav<strong>in</strong>es dispelled <strong>the</strong> illusion,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y knew that <strong>the</strong>y must encounter chill<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ds, and perhaps<br />

bit<strong>in</strong>g frosts, as <strong>the</strong>y ascended to <strong>the</strong> liiglier altitudes.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re lay <strong>the</strong> great Fusiyama, <strong>the</strong> holy niounta<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Japan, which
