THE BOY THAVICLLERS.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se nii<strong>in</strong>ers are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eiii])loy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men who supply live fish for<br />

<strong>the</strong> tables <strong>of</strong> those who live at a distance from <strong>the</strong> sea or from <strong>the</strong> lakes,<br />

and are will<strong>in</strong>g to pay for <strong>the</strong> luxury. A runner stands wait<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stant <strong>the</strong> fish is <strong>in</strong> his charge he is <strong>of</strong>f. If <strong>the</strong> distance is great, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are relays <strong>of</strong> men stationed along tlie route ; and so <strong>the</strong> precious merchan-<br />

dise goes forward from one to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r without a moment's dela}-. Only<br />

<strong>the</strong> wealthy can afford this mode <strong>of</strong> transport<strong>in</strong>g fish, as <strong>the</strong> cost is <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

very heav}-. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ces, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> olden time, were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> habit <strong>of</strong><br />

eat<strong>in</strong>g fresh fish at <strong>the</strong>ir tables every day that had been brought <strong>in</strong> this<br />

way for a hundred and fift)' miles. Great quantities <strong>of</strong> fish are still car-<br />

ried <strong>in</strong> this primitive manner, but not for such long distances as formerly.<br />

Mail)' fish are transported on horseback, <strong>in</strong> bari'els <strong>of</strong> water; but <strong>the</strong> most<br />

delicate and valuable ai'e borne only on <strong>the</strong> shoulders <strong>of</strong> men, as <strong>the</strong> jolt-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a horse will soon kill <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

After tlieir bath, <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s returned with <strong>the</strong> Doctor to <strong>the</strong>ir breakfast<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hotel. <strong>The</strong> breakfast was almost identical with <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

previous even<strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

and as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

appetites were not set so sharp-<br />

ly, <strong>the</strong> consumption <strong>of</strong> food was<br />

not so great. After bi'eakfast<br />

<strong>the</strong>y went on a stroll tlu'ough<br />

<strong>the</strong> streets <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town and up<br />

<strong>the</strong> sharp hill where it is built.<br />

<strong>The</strong> shops along <strong>the</strong> streets<br />

were filled with curiosities,<br />

made pr<strong>in</strong>cipally from shells<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r mar<strong>in</strong>e products<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Doctor said he was<br />

forcibly rem<strong>in</strong>ded <strong>of</strong> [Naples,<br />

Genoa, and o<strong>the</strong>r seaport<br />

places along <strong>the</strong> Mediterra-<br />

nean. <strong>The</strong>re were numerous<br />

conch -shells ; and Fred was<br />

desirous <strong>of</strong> blow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, un-<br />

til told by <strong>the</strong> Doctor that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had probably been blown<br />

by many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Japanese pilgrims, and he would run <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> con-<br />

tract<strong>in</strong>g some troublesome disease which liad been left from tiie sores<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir lips. So <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s were cautious, and politely rejected <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>vitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dealers to make a trial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sonorous qualities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
