" Sea-sickness is a mystery," said he, " and <strong>the</strong> more yon study it, <strong>the</strong><br />

less yon seem to nnderstand it. Some persons are never distnrbed by <strong>the</strong><br />

motion <strong>of</strong> a ship, no matter how violent it may be, while o<strong>the</strong>rs cannot<br />

endure <strong>the</strong> slightest rock<strong>in</strong>g. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sufferers recover <strong>in</strong> a short<br />

time, and after <strong>two</strong> or three\lays at sea are as well as ever, and cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

so. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong>re are some who never outlive its effects, and<br />

though <strong>the</strong>ir voyage may last a year or more, <strong>the</strong>y are no better sailors<br />

at <strong>the</strong> end than at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

"I knew a young man," he cont<strong>in</strong>ued, "who entered <strong>the</strong> jSavaL<br />

Academy, and graduated. When he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted to service on board<br />

a ship, he found himself perpetually sick on <strong>the</strong> water ; after an expe-<br />

rience <strong>of</strong> <strong>two</strong> years, and f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g no improvement, he resigned. Such<br />

occurrences are bv no means rare. I once travelled with a gentleman<br />

who was a splendid sailor <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e wea<strong>the</strong>r ; but when it became rough,<br />

he was all wrong, and went to bed."<br />

" Were you ever sea-sick. Doctor ?" queried Frank.<br />

« Never," was <strong>the</strong> reply, " and I had a funny <strong>in</strong>cident grow<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong><br />

this fact on my first voyage. We were go<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> New York harbor,
