THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

<strong>of</strong> faueiful names for tlieir bridges and temples, and fi'equently <strong>the</strong> name<br />

lias very little to do with <strong>the</strong> structure itself. I am told that <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

bridge <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a with exactly <strong>the</strong> same name as this, and not<br />

far from it is ano<strong>the</strong>r called <strong>the</strong> ' Bridge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ten Thousand Ages.' We<br />

have seen <strong>the</strong> 'Temple <strong>of</strong> Golden Happ<strong>in</strong>ess' and <strong>the</strong> 'Bridge <strong>of</strong> Long<br />

Eepose.' "We shall be on <strong>the</strong> lookout for <strong>the</strong> ' Temple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Starry Firma-<br />

ment,' and probably shall not be long <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g it. Strange that a people<br />

so practical as <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese should have so much poetry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir language<br />

"We came to <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Nan-kow, at <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nan-kow<br />

Pass, and stopped <strong>the</strong>re for d<strong>in</strong>ner. Our ride had given us a good ap])etite,<br />

and though our cook was not very skilful <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g our meal, we did<br />

not f<strong>in</strong>d fault with him, as we did not wish to run <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> wait<strong>in</strong>g<br />

while he cooked <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs over aga<strong>in</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong>n at Nan-kow is<br />

not so good as <strong>the</strong> Palace Hotel at San Francisco ;<br />

<strong>in</strong> fact, it is as bad as any<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hotel that we have seen. <strong>The</strong>y don't have much pleasure travel <strong>in</strong><br />

this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, and <strong>the</strong>refore it does not pay <strong>the</strong>m to give much<br />

attention to <strong>the</strong> comfort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir guests.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> jS'andvOW Pass is about thirteen miles long, and <strong>the</strong> road through<br />

it is very rough. <strong>The</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s are steep, and we saw here and <strong>the</strong>re<br />

ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> forts that were built long ago to keep out <strong>the</strong> Tartar <strong>in</strong>vaders <strong>of</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a. Our animals had several falls, but <strong>the</strong>y got through without acci-<br />

dent, aTid, what was more, <strong>the</strong>y brought ns to a village where <strong>the</strong>re was an<br />

<strong>in</strong>n with someth<strong>in</strong>g good to eat.<br />

" What do you suppose it was? It was mutton, which is kept boil<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pieces, and are <strong>of</strong> no fur<strong>the</strong>r nse.<br />

<strong>in</strong> a pot from morn<strong>in</strong>g till night ;<br />

and as fast as any is<br />

taken out, or <strong>the</strong> sonp boils down, <strong>the</strong>y till <strong>the</strong> kettle<br />

up aga<strong>in</strong>. Mutton is very cheap here, as sheep are<br />

abundant and can be bought at <strong>the</strong> purchaser's own<br />

price, provided he will keep himself with<strong>in</strong> reason.<br />

Great numljers <strong>of</strong> sheep are driven to Pek<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

suppl}' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, and we met large flocks at several<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts on <strong>the</strong> road. <strong>The</strong>ir wool has been exported to<br />

England and America ; but it is not <strong>of</strong> a t<strong>in</strong>e quality,<br />

and does not br<strong>in</strong>g a high price.<br />

"We passed <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> forts and towers every<br />

few miles, and our guide po<strong>in</strong>ted out some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tow-<br />

ers that were formerly used for convey<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>telligence<br />

bv means <strong>of</strong> signal -fires. <strong>The</strong>y are now fall<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

"This is <strong>the</strong> road by which <strong>the</strong> Tartars went to <strong>the</strong> conquest <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a,<br />
