GOOD-BYE, SWEETHEART 29<br />

Frank l<strong>in</strong>gered beh<strong>in</strong>d, and <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> tlie dialogue lias not been re-<br />

" She's a nice girl," said Fred to <strong>the</strong> Doctor as <strong>the</strong>y made <strong>the</strong>ir way<br />

to <strong>the</strong> ticket -<strong>of</strong>fice. "And she's very fond <strong>of</strong> Mary Bassett, Frank's<br />

sister. Spiteful people say, thongh, that<br />

she's <strong>of</strong>tener <strong>in</strong> Frank's company than <strong>in</strong><br />

Mary's ; and I know Frank is ready to<br />

pnnch <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>boy</strong> that dares<br />

to look at her."<br />

" Quite so," answered Dr. Bronson ; " I<br />

don't th<strong>in</strong>k Frank is likely to be forgetful<br />

<strong>of</strong> home."<br />

Soon <strong>the</strong> wldstle sounded, <strong>the</strong> great<br />

tra<strong>in</strong> rolled <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> station, tlie conductor<br />

shouted " All aboard !" our friends took<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir seats, <strong>the</strong> bell rang, and <strong>the</strong> locomotive<br />

coughed asthmatically as it moved<br />

on.<br />

Frank looked back as long as <strong>the</strong> station<br />

was <strong>in</strong> sight. Somebody cont<strong>in</strong>ued to wave<br />

a delicate handkerchief until <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> had good-bye.<br />

disappeared; somebody's eyes were full <strong>of</strong><br />

tears, and so were <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> somebody else. Somebody's good wishes<br />

followed <strong>the</strong> <strong>travellers</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>travellers</strong>—Frank especially—wafted back<br />

good wishes for that somebody.
