THE JAPANESE IDEA OF WKESTLTNG. 231<br />

looked more like a pair <strong>of</strong> tigers than Imman be<strong>in</strong>gs, and for a moment I<br />

thought it was not at all unlike M'liat a bull-fight <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> might be.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y stood glar<strong>in</strong>g, as I told you, and mak<strong>in</strong>g a noise like<br />

animals about to fight. Tliey stamped on <strong>the</strong> ground and made <strong>two</strong> or<br />

three rushes at each o<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong>n fell back to watch for a better chance.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y kept this up a m<strong>in</strong>ute or so, and <strong>the</strong>n darted <strong>in</strong> and cl<strong>in</strong>ched ; and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n 3'ou could see <strong>the</strong>ir great<br />

muscles swell, and realize that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were as strong as <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

fat.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>y did not try to throw<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r, as we do when we<br />

wrestle, but <strong>the</strong>y tried to pnsh<br />

from one side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. I couldn't understand this<br />

until <strong>the</strong> Doctor told me that it is<br />

not necessary for one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men<br />

to be thrown. All that is to be<br />

done is for one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to push<br />

THE CLINCH.<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r outside <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g; and even if he only gets one foot ont, <strong>the</strong> game<br />

is up. Only once dur<strong>in</strong>g all we saw <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> match did anybody get thrown<br />

down, as we should expect to see him <strong>in</strong> a wrestl<strong>in</strong>g match <strong>in</strong> America.<br />

And when he did get fairly on <strong>the</strong> ground, it was not very easy for him<br />

to rise, which is probably <strong>the</strong> reason why <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Japanese r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

are so different from ours.<br />

"<strong>The</strong>y had sevei-al matches <strong>of</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d with <strong>the</strong> <strong>two</strong> men stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up fac<strong>in</strong>g each o<strong>the</strong>r before tliey cl<strong>in</strong>ched ; and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y tried ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

plan. One man took his place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g, and braced himself as though<br />

he were try<strong>in</strong>g to stop a locomotive. When he was ready a signal was<br />

given, and ano<strong>the</strong>r man came out full tilt aga<strong>in</strong>st him. <strong>The</strong>y butted <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

heads toge<strong>the</strong>r like <strong>two</strong> rams, and tried to hit each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breast.<br />

In a short time <strong>the</strong>y were covered with blood, and looked very badly ; but<br />

<strong>the</strong> Doctor says <strong>the</strong>y were not hurt so much as <strong>the</strong>y seemed to be. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

kept this up for nearly a quarter <strong>of</strong> an hour, and took turns at <strong>the</strong> busi-<br />

ness—one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m be<strong>in</strong>g bull for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r to play railway tra<strong>in</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st.<br />

It was as bad for one as for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r; and if I had my choice which char-<br />

acter to play, I wonldn't play ei<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

"After <strong>the</strong> wrestl<strong>in</strong>g was over <strong>the</strong>y had some fenc<strong>in</strong>g, which I liked<br />

much better, as <strong>the</strong>re was more skill to it and less brutality. <strong>The</strong> fencers<br />

were announced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same way as tlie o<strong>the</strong>r performers had been. <strong>The</strong>y
