FEMININE CUSTOMS IN JAPAN. 205<br />
Doctor Bi'onson expla<strong>in</strong>ed that it was done by means <strong>of</strong> a black pa<strong>in</strong>t<br />
or varnisli, peculiar to Japan. <strong>The</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t was robbed on <strong>the</strong> teeth with a<br />
rag or stiff brush, and made <strong>the</strong> gums very sore at first. It rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
quite bright and dist<strong>in</strong>ct for tlie first few days, l)ut <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eonrse <strong>of</strong> a<br />
week it faded, and by <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> ten or twelve days a renewal was neces-<br />
sary. If left to itself, <strong>the</strong> color<strong>in</strong>g would disappear altoge<strong>the</strong>r with<strong>in</strong> a<br />
month fronr <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> its application.<br />
Frank wished to know if <strong>the</strong> women were desirous <strong>of</strong> liav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> custom<br />
abolished, but on this po<strong>in</strong>t it was not easy for him to obta<strong>in</strong> jjrecise<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation. <strong>The</strong> Doctor thought it was a matter <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual ratlier<br />
than <strong>of</strong> general preference, and that <strong>the</strong> views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> women were largely<br />
<strong>in</strong>fluenced by those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir husln<strong>in</strong>ds. "<strong>The</strong> Japanese wives," said he,<br />
" are like <strong>the</strong> wives <strong>of</strong> most o<strong>the</strong>r countries, and generally wish to do ac-<br />
cord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> tastes and desires <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir husbands. As you grow older<br />
you will f<strong>in</strong>d that <strong>the</strong> women <strong>of</strong> all lands endeavor to suit <strong>the</strong>ir modes <strong>of</strong><br />
dress<strong>in</strong>g and adornment to <strong>the</strong> wisiies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men with whom <strong>the</strong>y come<br />
mostly <strong>in</strong> contact ; <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>in</strong>dividual exceptions, but <strong>the</strong>y do<br />
not weaken <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general rule. In America as <strong>in</strong> England, <strong>in</strong><br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>a as <strong>in</strong> Japan, <strong>in</strong> India as <strong>in</strong> Peru, it is <strong>the</strong> fancy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men that<br />
governs <strong>the</strong> dress and personal decoration <strong>of</strong> tlie o<strong>the</strong>r half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> race. As<br />
long as it was <strong>the</strong> fashion to blacken <strong>the</strong> teeth <strong>in</strong> this countrj^, <strong>the</strong> women<br />
did it without a murmur ; but as soon as <strong>the</strong> men showed a will<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
for <strong>the</strong>m to discont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong> practice, and especially when that will<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
became a desire, <strong>the</strong>y began to discont<strong>in</strong>ue it. Twenty years from this<br />
time, I imag<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> women with blackened teeth will be less numerous<br />
than those at present with white ones.<br />
" <strong>The</strong> abandonment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> custom began <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open ports, and is<br />
spread<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> country. It will spread <strong>in</strong> exactly <strong>the</strong> same ratio<br />
as Japan adopts o<strong>the</strong>r customs and waj's <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world ;<br />
and as<br />
fast as she takes on our Western civilization, just so fast will she drop<br />
such <strong>of</strong> her forms as are antagonistic to it.''<br />
<strong>The</strong> party rested a portion <strong>of</strong> a day at Hakone, and <strong>the</strong>n went on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
wa3^ Travell<strong>in</strong>g by cango had become so wearisome that <strong>the</strong>y engaged a<br />
horse-tra<strong>in</strong> for a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way, and had <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir baggage<br />
carried on <strong>the</strong> backs <strong>of</strong> Japanese steeds. <strong>The</strong>y found this an improvement<br />
on <strong>the</strong> old plan, though <strong>the</strong> horses were ra<strong>the</strong>r more unruly than tlie cango<br />
coolies, and frequently made a serious disturbance. Occasionally, wlien<br />
<strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> was ready to start, <strong>the</strong> beasts would <strong>in</strong>dulge <strong>in</strong> a general kick<strong>in</strong>g-<br />
match all aronnd, to <strong>the</strong> great detriment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir burdens, whe<strong>the</strong>r ani-<br />
mate or o<strong>the</strong>rwise. <strong>The</strong> best and gentlest horses had been selected for
