<strong>the</strong> remark by Fred that a noseless dog was very far from noiseless.<br />

As <strong>the</strong>y had been kept <strong>in</strong> b}' <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>, Frank thought he could not do<br />

better than send to his sister a Japanese picture <strong>of</strong> a party caught <strong>in</strong> a<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>-stoian. lie expla<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Japan was C[uite as wet as <strong>in</strong> any<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r country, and that umbrellas were just as necessary as at home. He<br />

added that tlie Japanese umbrellas were made <strong>of</strong> paper, and kept <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong><br />

covered with several thicknesses <strong>of</strong> oiled paper carefully dried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> suu.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were very much used, s<strong>in</strong>ce nearly everybody carried an umbrella,<br />

<strong>in</strong> fair wea<strong>the</strong>r as well as <strong>in</strong> foul ; if <strong>the</strong> umbrella was not needed aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>, it was useful to keep <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> heat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun, which was very se-<br />

vere <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day.<br />

<strong>The</strong> letters were ready <strong>in</strong> season for <strong>the</strong> mail for America, and <strong>in</strong> due<br />

time <strong>the</strong>y reached <strong>the</strong>ir dest<strong>in</strong>ation and carried pleasure to several hearts.<br />

It was evident that <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s were enjoy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves, and at <strong>the</strong> same<br />

time learn<strong>in</strong>g much about <strong>the</strong> strange countrj^ <strong>the</strong>y had gone to see.<br />
