ENRAGED COOLIE.<br />

THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

" Please tell ns about that," said<br />

Fi'ed. Frank echoed <strong>the</strong> request, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>former nodded his consent.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> ship had taken its cargo at<br />

Macao, and we went out to sea with a<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e breeze. We had over a thousand<br />

' passengers ' <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hold, and onl)' a<br />

small number were to be allowed on<br />

deck at one time, as several ships had<br />

been captured by <strong>the</strong> coolies, and we<br />

did not <strong>in</strong>tend to be taken if we could<br />

help it. Two days after we started<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was trouble among <strong>the</strong> coolies,<br />

and several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m ran about <strong>the</strong><br />

space below-deck and threatened to set<br />

<strong>the</strong> ship on fire. <strong>The</strong>y did build a fire<br />

<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dry boards used for mak-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir sleep<strong>in</strong>g-berths; but we cov-<br />

ered <strong>the</strong> hatches with tarpaul<strong>in</strong>s, and<br />

held <strong>the</strong> smoke down <strong>the</strong>re, so that <strong>the</strong> coolies were nearly snjo<strong>the</strong>red and<br />

compelled to pnt <strong>the</strong> fire out <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> hatchway's were covered with grat<strong>in</strong>gs to admit <strong>of</strong> a free circu-<br />

lation <strong>of</strong> air, and <strong>the</strong>y were so firmly fastened that <strong>the</strong> coolies could not<br />

disturb <strong>the</strong>m. Several men were on deck when <strong>the</strong> trouble began, and<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m tried to get through <strong>the</strong> grat<strong>in</strong>g to jo<strong>in</strong> his companions. He<br />

managed to squeeze his body through <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong>n discovered<br />

too late tfiat he had a fall <strong>of</strong> nearly<br />

thirty feet before him, as <strong>the</strong> hatch<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower deck was open. He<br />

struggled a moment, <strong>the</strong>n dropped<br />

to <strong>the</strong> lower hold, and was killed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall.<br />

" It became necessary to fire on<br />

<strong>the</strong> mut<strong>in</strong>eers, and for this we raised<br />

<strong>the</strong> tarpaul<strong>in</strong>s over one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hatch-<br />

es. <strong>The</strong> smfike poured out <strong>in</strong> a dense<br />

mass and almost sujo<strong>the</strong>red ns, and<br />

we could only see <strong>the</strong> forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

men veiy dimly, like a ship <strong>in</strong> a fog.<br />

We fired, and cont<strong>in</strong>ued to fire till A 1>EAL>LV F.VLL.
