" <strong>The</strong>re is a cnrious story <strong>in</strong> connection witli it. In 1816 a ship, <strong>the</strong><br />

Canton, sailed from Sitka, and was supposed to have been lost at sea, as<br />

she never reached her dest<strong>in</strong>ation. Fifty years later this island was dis-<br />

covered, and upon it was part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wreck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canton. <strong>The</strong>re were<br />

traces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> huts which were built by <strong>the</strong> crew dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir stay, and it<br />

was evident that <strong>the</strong>y constructed a smaller vessel from <strong>the</strong> fragments <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wreck, and sailed away <strong>in</strong> it."<br />

" And were lost <strong>in</strong> it, I suppose?"<br />

" Undoubtedly, as noth<strong>in</strong>g has ever been heard from <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong>y did<br />

not leave any history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong> island, or, at any rate, none was<br />

ever found."<br />
