FARMING PKOCESSES IN JAPAN. 10£<br />

Fred saw a man dipp<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g from a hole <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground, and<br />

asked tlie Doctor what lie was do<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Tiie Doctor expla<strong>in</strong>ed that<br />

<strong>the</strong> hole was a cask set <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ground, and that it probably<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ed liquid manure. Tlie<br />

Japanese use it for enrich<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir fields. <strong>The</strong>y keep it <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se holes, covered with a<br />

slight ro<strong>of</strong> to prevent its evap-<br />

oration as much as possible,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y spread it around<br />

where wanted by means <strong>of</strong><br />

buckets. <strong>The</strong> great drawback<br />

to a walk <strong>in</strong> a Japanese field is<br />

<strong>the</strong> frequency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manure<br />

deposits, as <strong>the</strong> odor aris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from <strong>the</strong>m is anyth<strong>in</strong>g but<br />

agreeable. Particularly is this<br />

so <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea-<br />

son, when <strong>the</strong> young plants re-<br />

quire a great deal <strong>of</strong> attention<br />

and nourishment. A nose at such times is an organ <strong>of</strong> great <strong>in</strong>conven-<br />

ience.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Doctor went on to expla<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> Japanese farmers were very<br />

watchful <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir crops, and that men were employed to scare away <strong>the</strong><br />

birds, that sometimes dug up <strong>the</strong> seed after it Avas planted, and also ate<br />

<strong>the</strong> gra<strong>in</strong> while it was ripen<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> Avatchmen had pieces <strong>of</strong> board<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y put on frames suspended <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air, and so arranged that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

rattled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, and performed a service similar to tliat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scare-<br />

crow <strong>in</strong> America. In addition to this mode <strong>of</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g a noise, <strong>the</strong> watchmen<br />

had whistles and clappers, and sometimes <strong>the</strong>y carried small bells<br />

M'hich <strong>the</strong>y rang as <strong>the</strong>y walked about. It was <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> a watcliman<br />

to keep constantly on tlie alert, as <strong>the</strong> birds were full <strong>of</strong> mischief, and,<br />

from be<strong>in</strong>g rarely shot at, <strong>the</strong>ir boldness and impudence were Cjuite aston-<br />

ish<strong>in</strong>g to one freshly arrived from America, where tlie use <strong>of</strong> fire-arms is<br />

so general.<br />

Wliile Doctor Bronson was expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> birds, Fred suddenly<br />

gave an exclamation <strong>of</strong> delight.<br />

" Look, look !" said he ;<br />

HOW TUEY CSli MANUUE.<br />

" Avliat are those beautiful white birds ?"
