<strong>The</strong>re are probably no o<strong>the</strong>r artists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world who can equal <strong>the</strong><br />

Japanese <strong>in</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> stork <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> ways and attitudes he assumes.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are almost countless ; but, not satisfied with this, <strong>the</strong>re are some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> native artists who are accused <strong>of</strong> represent<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>in</strong> attitudes he was<br />

never known to take. Admitt<strong>in</strong>g this to be <strong>the</strong> case, it cannot be disputed<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Japanese are masters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong> del<strong>in</strong>eat<strong>in</strong>g this bird,<br />

and that one is never weary <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at his portrait as <strong>the</strong>y draw it.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y have nearly ecpial skill <strong>in</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r birds, and a few strokes<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brush or pencil will accomplish marvels <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> pictorial<br />

representation. A flock <strong>of</strong> geese, some on <strong>the</strong> ground and o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong><br />

flight, can be drawn <strong>in</strong> a few moments by a native designer, and <strong>the</strong><br />

most exact<strong>in</strong>g critic will not f<strong>in</strong>d anyth<strong>in</strong>g want<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>The</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> sped onward, and <strong>in</strong> an hour from <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
