54 THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

four o'clock is "eight bells." Eight o'clock, noon, and midnight are also<br />

signalled by eight strokes on <strong>the</strong> bell, and after a little while a traveller<br />

accustoms himself to <strong>the</strong> new mode <strong>of</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g time.<br />

Fred remembered that when <strong>the</strong>y left San Francisco at noon, <strong>the</strong> bell<br />

struck eight times, <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> twelve, as he thought it should have struck.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Doctor's explanation made it clear to him.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second day out <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s began to repeat all <strong>the</strong> poetry <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

remember about <strong>the</strong> sea, and were surprised at <strong>the</strong> stock <strong>the</strong>y had on hand.<br />

Fred recalled someth<strong>in</strong>g he had read <strong>in</strong> IIarj)er^s Magaz<strong>in</strong>e, which ran as<br />

follows<br />

:<br />

"<strong>Far</strong> upon <strong>the</strong> unknown deep,<br />

'Mid <strong>the</strong> billows circl<strong>in</strong>g round,<br />

Where <strong>the</strong> tireless sea-birds sweep<br />

Outward bound.<br />

Noth<strong>in</strong>g but a speck we seem,<br />

In <strong>the</strong> waste <strong>of</strong> waters round,<br />

Float<strong>in</strong>g, iioat<strong>in</strong>g like a dream ;<br />

Outward bound."<br />

Frank was less sentimental, and repeated <strong>the</strong>se l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

"Two th<strong>in</strong>gs break <strong>the</strong> monotony<br />

Of a great ocean trip<br />

Sometimes, alas ! you ship a sea,<br />

And sometimes see a ship."<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y called upon <strong>the</strong> Doctor for a contribution, orig<strong>in</strong>al or select-<br />

ed, with this result<br />

:<br />

" <strong>The</strong> praises <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ocean grand,<br />

'Tis very well to s<strong>in</strong>g on land.<br />

'Tis \ery f<strong>in</strong>e to hear <strong>the</strong>m carolled<br />

By Thomas Campbell or Childe Harold ;<br />

But sad, <strong>in</strong>deed, to see that ocean<br />

From east to west <strong>in</strong> wild commotion."<br />

<strong>The</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d had been freshen<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce noon, and <strong>the</strong> roll<strong>in</strong>g motion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ship was not altoge<strong>the</strong>r agreeable to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>experienced <strong>boy</strong>s. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

were about to have <strong>the</strong>ir first accpua<strong>in</strong>tance with sea-sickness ; and though<br />

<strong>the</strong>y held on ixianfully and rema<strong>in</strong>ed on deck through <strong>the</strong> afternoon, <strong>the</strong><br />

ocean proved too much for <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>y had no appetite for d<strong>in</strong>ner or<br />

supper. But <strong>the</strong>ir malady did not last long, and by <strong>the</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were as merry as ever, and laughed over <strong>the</strong> event. <strong>The</strong>y asked <strong>the</strong><br />

Doctor to expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir trouble, but he shook his head, and<br />

said <strong>the</strong> whole th<strong>in</strong>g was a great puzzle.<br />
