see <strong>the</strong> Falls by <strong>in</strong>oonliglit, and <strong>in</strong> good season tliey went to bed, wLei'e<br />

tliey slept admirably. <strong>The</strong> next day <strong>the</strong> journey was resumed, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had a farewell view <strong>of</strong> Kiagara from <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> car as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

crossed <strong>the</strong> Suspension Eridge from <strong>the</strong> American to <strong>the</strong> Canadian side.<br />

(Jn <strong>the</strong>y went over tlie Great Western Railway <strong>of</strong> Canada, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

over <strong>the</strong> Michigan Central ; and on <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g after leav<strong>in</strong>g ^'iagara<br />

<strong>the</strong>y rolled <strong>in</strong>to Chicago. Here <strong>the</strong>y sjjent a day <strong>in</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g places <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lake City. An old friend <strong>of</strong> Doctor Ijronson came to<br />

see him at <strong>the</strong> Trernont House, and took <strong>the</strong> party out for a drive. L'nder<br />

<strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> this hospitable citizen, <strong>the</strong>y were taken to see <strong>the</strong> City-<br />

hall, <strong>the</strong> stock-yards, <strong>the</strong> tunnel under <strong>the</strong> river, tlie gra<strong>in</strong>-elevators, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs with which every one who spends a short time <strong>in</strong> Chicago is<br />

sure to be made familiar. <strong>The</strong>y were shown <strong>the</strong> traces <strong>of</strong> tlie great fire<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1870, and were shown, too, what progress had been made <strong>in</strong> rebuild<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> city and remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> signs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> calamity. Before <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir tour, <strong>the</strong>y had absorbed much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enthusiasm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir guide, and<br />

were ready to pronounce Chicago <strong>the</strong> most remarkable city <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present<br />

time.<br />

As <strong>the</strong>y were study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> map to lay out <strong>the</strong>ir route westward, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>boy</strong>s noticed that tlie l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> railways radiated <strong>in</strong> all directions from<br />

Chicago, like <strong>the</strong> diverg<strong>in</strong>g cords <strong>of</strong> a spider's web. Everywhere <strong>the</strong>y<br />

stretched out except over <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> Lake Michigan, where railway<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g has thus far been impossible. <strong>The</strong> Doctor exyjla<strong>in</strong>ed that Chi-<br />

cago was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important railway centres <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States,<br />

and owed much <strong>of</strong> its prosperity to <strong>the</strong> ne<strong>two</strong>rk <strong>the</strong>y saw on <strong>the</strong> map,<br />

" I have a question," said Frank, suddenly brighten<strong>in</strong>g up.<br />

" Well, what is it «"<br />

" Why is that ne<strong>two</strong>rk we have just been look<strong>in</strong>g at like a crow call-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g to his mates ?"<br />

" Give it up ; let's liave it."<br />

"Because it makes Chi-ca-go."<br />

"What's that to do with <strong>the</strong> crow?" Fred asked.<br />

"Wliy, everyth<strong>in</strong>g," Frank answered; "<strong>the</strong> crow makes ye-caw-go,<br />

doesn't it ?"<br />

" Kow, Frank," <strong>the</strong> Doctor said, as he laughed over <strong>the</strong> conundrum,<br />

"mak<strong>in</strong>g puns when we're a thousand miles from home and go<strong>in</strong>g west!<br />

However, that will do for a beg<strong>in</strong>ner ; but don't try too <strong>of</strong>ten."<br />

Fred thought he must say someth<strong>in</strong>g, but was undecided for a mo-<br />

ment. <strong>The</strong> room was open, and as he looked <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> hall, he saw <strong>the</strong><br />

chambermaid approach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> opposite door with <strong>the</strong> evident <strong>in</strong>tention
