and several times we ]ia\'e liad close escapes from be<strong>in</strong>g rnn over by some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> carts that were carry<strong>in</strong>g heavy loads. With <strong>two</strong> njen to push <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

and <strong>two</strong> pull<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> same time, tliey will move loads that would be no<br />

small matter for a pair <strong>of</strong> horses. <strong>The</strong>y keep up a great shout<strong>in</strong>g, and at<br />

first it puzzles you to know why <strong>the</strong>y do it until you remember that it is<br />

desirable <strong>the</strong>y should all pull toge<strong>the</strong>r. You can hoar <strong>the</strong>m a long way<br />

<strong>of</strong>f, and if you get <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir way it is your own fault, as it was ours.<br />

<strong>The</strong> party went to Lake Biwa as <strong>the</strong>y had proposed, and certa<strong>in</strong>ly no<br />

one should omit it from his excursions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> Kioto. <strong>The</strong><br />

distance is only seven miles, and an excellent road leads <strong>the</strong>i'e from <strong>the</strong><br />

city. Along <strong>the</strong> route <strong>the</strong>y met a dense crowd <strong>of</strong> people com<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>the</strong>re is a vast amount <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess between <strong>the</strong> city and <strong>the</strong><br />

lake. <strong>The</strong>re were men on foot and <strong>in</strong> j<strong>in</strong>-riki-shas, <strong>the</strong>re were porters<br />

with loads and porters without loads, <strong>the</strong>i'e were packdiorses <strong>in</strong> gi-eat<br />

number, and <strong>the</strong>re were wagons with merchandise bound for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior<br />

or for <strong>the</strong> sealtoard. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pack-horses had burdens <strong>the</strong> reverse <strong>of</strong><br />

savory, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s learned on <strong>in</strong>cpiiry that <strong>the</strong>y were transport<strong>in</strong>g liquid<br />
