several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m had been shot down, and all <strong>the</strong>ir efforts to get at ns were<br />

<strong>of</strong> no avail. <strong>The</strong>re were about sixty men <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crew, and, as we had over<br />

a thousand coolies on board, we had numbers aga<strong>in</strong>st ns fearfully. Bat<br />

<strong>the</strong>y liad no fire-arms, while we had a good supply <strong>of</strong> rifles and pistols,<br />

with plenty <strong>of</strong> ammunition. At <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>the</strong>re were not<br />

far from a hundred coolies on deck ;<br />

but we drove <strong>the</strong>m forward, and kept<br />

so large a guard over <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y could not have done anyth<strong>in</strong>g to help<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir friends below if <strong>the</strong>y had been disposed to do so.<br />
