many a stranger has foi;nd a cordial welcome with<strong>in</strong> tlie walls <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se popular establishments.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> tea-house at <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liill, Doctor Bronson led <strong>the</strong> way<br />

down a steep path to <strong>the</strong> sea. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> path, and open<strong>in</strong>g upon<br />

tlie sea, <strong>the</strong>re is a cavern which <strong>the</strong> Japanese consider sacred. Formerly<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would not allow a stranger to enter <strong>the</strong> cavern for fear <strong>of</strong> pollut<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it ; but at present <strong>the</strong>y make no opposition, for <strong>the</strong> double reason that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have found <strong>the</strong> cave rema<strong>in</strong>s as if noth<strong>in</strong>g had happened, and, more-<br />

over, <strong>the</strong> stranger is so will<strong>in</strong>g to pay for <strong>the</strong> pri\'ilege <strong>of</strong> exjJoration that<br />

a considerable sum is annually obta<strong>in</strong>ed from hi<strong>in</strong>. When <strong>the</strong> tide is <strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> cave can only be entered by means <strong>of</strong> a boat ; but at low-water one<br />

can creep along a narrow ledge <strong>of</strong> rock where a pathway has been cut,<br />

wliich he can follow to <strong>the</strong> term<strong>in</strong>us. Our party engaged a guide with<br />

torches, and were taken to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cave, where <strong>the</strong>y found a<br />

hideous-look<strong>in</strong>g idol that was <strong>the</strong> presid<strong>in</strong>g div<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> place. A<br />

shr<strong>in</strong>e had been erected here, and when it was lighted up <strong>the</strong> appearance<br />

was fairly impos<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> pilgrims consider it a pious duty to visit this<br />

shr<strong>in</strong>e whenever <strong>the</strong>y come to <strong>the</strong> island, and it has become rpiite famous<br />

thi'ougliout Japan.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s were not <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to stay long <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cave, as <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> waters beat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong> entrance was almost deafen<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>y very<br />

soon sought <strong>the</strong> open air, where a new enterta<strong>in</strong>ment awaited <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
