To my Young Friends :<br />

PREFACE.<br />

Not nianj' years ago, Ch<strong>in</strong>a and Japan were regarded as among <strong>the</strong><br />

barbarous nations. <strong>The</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world knew comparatively little about<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir peoples, and, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> those countries had<br />

only a slight knowledge <strong>of</strong> Europe and America. To-day <strong>the</strong> situation is<br />

greatly changed :<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

and Japan are hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>timate relations with ns<br />

and with Europe, and <strong>the</strong>re is every prospect that <strong>the</strong> acqua<strong>in</strong>tance be-<br />

tween <strong>the</strong> <strong>East</strong> and <strong>the</strong> West will <strong>in</strong>crease as <strong>the</strong> years roll on. <strong>The</strong>re is<br />

a general desire for <strong>in</strong>formation concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> tlie <strong>Far</strong> <strong>East</strong>,<br />

and it is especially strong among <strong>the</strong> <strong>youths</strong> <strong>of</strong> America.<br />

<strong>The</strong> characters <strong>in</strong> " <strong>The</strong> Boy Travellers " are fictitious ;<br />

bnt *lie scenes<br />

that passed before <strong>the</strong>ir eyes, <strong>the</strong> people <strong>the</strong>y met, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidents and<br />

accidents that befell <strong>the</strong>m are real. <strong>The</strong> routes <strong>the</strong>y travelled, <strong>the</strong> cities<br />

<strong>the</strong>y visited, <strong>the</strong> excursions <strong>the</strong>y made, <strong>the</strong> observations <strong>the</strong>y recorded—<strong>in</strong><br />

fact, nearly all that goes to make up this volume—were <strong>the</strong> actual experi-<br />

ences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author at a very recent date. In a few <strong>in</strong>stances I have used<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation obta<strong>in</strong>ed from o<strong>the</strong>rs, but only after careful <strong>in</strong>vestigation has<br />

conv<strong>in</strong>ced me <strong>of</strong> its entire correctness. I have aimed to give a faithful<br />

picture <strong>of</strong> Japan and Ch<strong>in</strong>a as <strong>the</strong>y appear to-day, and to make such com-<br />

parisons with <strong>the</strong> past that <strong>the</strong> reader can easily comprehend <strong>the</strong> clianges<br />

that have occurred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last twent}' years. And I have also endeavored<br />

to convey <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> siich a way that <strong>the</strong> story shall not be con-<br />

sidered tedious. Miss Effie and " <strong>The</strong> Mystery " may seem siiperfluous to<br />

some readers, but I am <strong>of</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion that <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> those who peruse<br />

<strong>the</strong> book will not consider <strong>the</strong>m unnecessary to <strong>the</strong> narrative.<br />

In prepar<strong>in</strong>g illustrations for this volume <strong>the</strong> publishers have k<strong>in</strong>dly<br />

allowed me to make use <strong>of</strong> some engrav<strong>in</strong>gs that have already appeared <strong>in</strong>
