until our day. Now <strong>the</strong> missionaries are at liberty to pi-eaeli tlie Gospel,<br />

and may make as many converts as tliey please."<br />

As tliey walked away from <strong>the</strong> kosatsu <strong>the</strong>y saw a gronp engaged <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> childish amusement <strong>of</strong> blow<strong>in</strong>g soap-bubbles. <strong>The</strong>re were three<br />

persons <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group, a man and <strong>two</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s, and <strong>the</strong> youngsters were as<br />

happy as American or English <strong>boy</strong>s would have been under similar cir-<br />

cumstances. While <strong>the</strong> man blew <strong>the</strong> bubbles, <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s danced around<br />

him and endeavored to catch <strong>the</strong> sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g globes. Fred and Frank were<br />

much <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spectacle, and had it not been for <strong>the</strong>ir sense <strong>of</strong><br />

dignity, and <strong>the</strong> manifest impropriety <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terfer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y would have jo<strong>in</strong>-<br />

ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sport. <strong>The</strong> jslayers were poorly clad, and evidently did not be-<br />

long to <strong>the</strong> wealthier class ; but <strong>the</strong>y were as happy as though <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

been pr<strong>in</strong>ces ;<br />

<strong>in</strong> fact, it is very doubtful if pr<strong>in</strong>ces could have had a quarter<br />

as much enjoyment from <strong>the</strong> chase <strong>of</strong> soap-bubbles.<br />

BLOWING BUBBLES<br />

Even<strong>in</strong>g was approach<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong> i^arty concluded to defer <strong>the</strong>ir sight-<br />

.see<strong>in</strong>g until <strong>the</strong> morrow. <strong>The</strong>y returned to <strong>the</strong> railway station, and were<br />

just <strong>in</strong> t<strong>in</strong>]e to catch <strong>the</strong> last tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day for Yokohama. <strong>The</strong>re was<br />

a hotel at Tokio on <strong>the</strong> European system, and if <strong>the</strong>y had missed <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would have patronized this establishment. <strong>The</strong> Doctor liad spent a<br />

week <strong>the</strong>re, and spoke favorably <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sei-yo-ken, as <strong>the</strong> hotel is called.
