"<strong>The</strong> Gate <strong>of</strong> Extensive Peace." It is where <strong>the</strong> emperor comes on great<br />

public occasions ; and beyond it are <strong>two</strong> halls where <strong>the</strong> foreign visitors<br />

are received at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> each 3'ear, and where <strong>the</strong> emperor ex-<br />

am<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> implements nsed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 02:)en<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual season <strong>of</strong><br />

plough<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> plough<strong>in</strong>g eei'emony does not take place here, but <strong>in</strong><br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, and <strong>the</strong> emperor himself holds <strong>the</strong> plough to<br />

turn <strong>the</strong> first furrow. <strong>The</strong>re are some very pretty gardens <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pro-<br />

hibited City, and we had a f<strong>in</strong>e opportunity to learn someth<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong><br />

skill <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong> landscape garden<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>re are canals, founta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

bridges, flower-beds, groves, and little liillocks, all carefully tended, and<br />

form<strong>in</strong>g a very pretty picture <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong> temples and pavil-<br />

ions that stand anions' <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

" ATe have seen many temples— so many, <strong>in</strong> fact, that it is difficult to<br />

remember all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most impressive is <strong>the</strong> Temple <strong>of</strong><br />

Heaven, which has three circular ro<strong>of</strong>s, one above ano<strong>the</strong>r, and is said to<br />

be n<strong>in</strong>ety-n<strong>in</strong>e feet high. <strong>The</strong> tiles 011 <strong>the</strong> top are <strong>of</strong> jjorcela<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> color<br />

<strong>of</strong> a clear sky, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> builder was to imitate <strong>the</strong> vault <strong>of</strong><br />

heaven. On <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong>re are altars wliei'e sacrifices are <strong>of</strong>fered to <strong>the</strong><br />

memory <strong>of</strong> former emperors <strong>of</strong> (Jli<strong>in</strong>a, and on certa<strong>in</strong> occasions <strong>the</strong> em-<br />

]ieror conies here to take part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceremonies.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>n we went to see tlie great bell, which is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wonders <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world, though it is not so large as <strong>the</strong> bell at Moscow. It is said to
