THE BOY TRAVELLKRS.<br />

A I'AIR or 1VEESTLERS AND THEIR MANAGER.<br />

<strong>the</strong> comer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public square <strong>in</strong> our town, but fat all over. I felt<br />

<strong>the</strong> back and arms <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, and his mnscles were as hard as iron.<br />

<strong>The</strong> flesh on his breast was s<strong>of</strong>t, and seemed like a thick cushion <strong>of</strong> fat.<br />

I tli<strong>in</strong>k you might have hit lii<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>re with a mallet without hurt<strong>in</strong>g him<br />

much.<br />

" Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m could hardly see out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir eyes on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fat around <strong>the</strong>m ;<br />

and when <strong>the</strong>ir arms were doubled up, <strong>the</strong>y looked like<br />

<strong>the</strong> hams <strong>of</strong> a hog. I was told tliat <strong>the</strong> Japanese idea <strong>of</strong> a wrestler is to<br />

is right. <strong>The</strong>y tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir men all <strong>the</strong>ir lives to have <strong>the</strong>m get up all <strong>the</strong><br />

fat <strong>the</strong>y can; and if a man doesn't get it fast enough, tliey put him to<br />

work, and tell him he can never be a wrestler. It is odd that a people so<br />

th<strong>in</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Japanese should th<strong>in</strong>k so much about hav<strong>in</strong>g men fat ; but I<br />

suppose it is because we all like <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs that are our opposites. But<br />

this isn't tell<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> wrestl<strong>in</strong>g match.<br />

" After <strong>the</strong> herald had given <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrestlers who were to<br />

make <strong>the</strong> first round, <strong>the</strong> fellows came <strong>in</strong>. <strong>The</strong>y were dressed without<br />

any clotlies to speak <strong>of</strong>, or ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y were quite undressed, with <strong>the</strong><br />

exception <strong>of</strong> a cloth around <strong>the</strong>ir lo<strong>in</strong>s. <strong>The</strong>y came <strong>in</strong> on opposite sides<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g, and stood <strong>the</strong>re about five feet apart, each man rest<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

hands on his knees, and glar<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r like a wild beast. <strong>The</strong>y
