" Well, wo liave liacl enoiigli <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se disagreealjle til<strong>in</strong>gs, and will turn<br />

to someth<strong>in</strong>g else. We passed b)' <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> candidates for niilitary<br />

honors compete for prizes by shoot<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> bow and arrow. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> first exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>the</strong>y are re(piired to shoot at a mark with three ar-<br />

rows, and <strong>the</strong> one who makes <strong>the</strong> best shots is pronounced <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> prize. At <strong>the</strong> second exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>the</strong>y must practise on horseback,<br />

with tlie horse stand<strong>in</strong>g still; and at <strong>the</strong> third <strong>the</strong>y must shoot three ar-<br />

rows from <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> a runn<strong>in</strong>g horse. Afterwards <strong>the</strong>^' are exercised <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> bend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> some very stiff bows and <strong>the</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> heavy swords and<br />

stones. <strong>The</strong>re is a certa<strong>in</strong> scale <strong>of</strong> merit <strong>the</strong>y must ])ass to be successful;<br />

and when <strong>the</strong>y succeed, <strong>the</strong>ir names are sent up for ano<strong>the</strong>r exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

before higher <strong>of</strong>ficials than <strong>the</strong> ones <strong>the</strong>y have passed before. It is a<br />

curious fact that a man who does well as an archer is entitled to a degi-ee<br />

among <strong>the</strong> literary graduates, though he may not be able to cari-y away a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle prize for his literary accomplishments alone."<br />
