THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

a sharp race between <strong>the</strong> buffalo and me, aud, as he had twice as many<br />

legs as I could count, he made <strong>the</strong> best speed. I could hear his heavy<br />

breath<strong>in</strong>g close beh<strong>in</strong>d me, and his footsteps, as he galloped along,<br />

sounded as though somebody were pound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ground with a large<br />

hammer. Just as I began to th<strong>in</strong>k he would soon have me on his horns,<br />

I heard <strong>the</strong> report <strong>of</strong> a rifle at one side. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> buflfalo stumbled and<br />

fell, and I ventured to look around. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men from camp had<br />

fired just <strong>in</strong> time to save me from a very unpleasant predicament, and I<br />

concluded I didn't want any more buffalo-hunt<strong>in</strong>g for that day."<br />

Hardly had <strong>the</strong> Doctor f<strong>in</strong>ished his story when <strong>the</strong>re was a long<br />

whistle from <strong>the</strong> locomotive, followed b^^ several short ones. <strong>The</strong> sjteed<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> was slackened, and, while <strong>the</strong> passengers were wonder<strong>in</strong>g<br />

what was <strong>the</strong> matter, <strong>the</strong> conductor came <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> car where our friends<br />

were seated and told <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>re was a herd <strong>of</strong> buffaloes cross<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

track.<br />

" We shall run slowly through <strong>the</strong> herd," <strong>the</strong> conductor expla<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

'•' and you will have a good chance to see <strong>the</strong> buffalo at home."<br />

<strong>The</strong>)^ opened <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows and looked out. Sure enough; <strong>the</strong> ])la<strong>in</strong><br />

UKKU or BUFFALOES MOVING.
