SIGHTS IN THE EASTERN CAPITAL OF JAPAN.<br />

^I"^0 see <strong>the</strong> wliole <strong>of</strong> Tokio is a matter <strong>of</strong> no small moment, as <strong>the</strong> area<br />

-L <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city is very great. <strong>The</strong>re seems to have been no st<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

gronnd when <strong>the</strong> place was laid out, and <strong>in</strong> rid<strong>in</strong>g through it you f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

whole fields and gardens so widely spread that you can readily imag<strong>in</strong>e<br />

yourself to be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural districts, and are ra<strong>the</strong>r surprised when told<br />

that yon are yet <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city limits. <strong>The</strong> city is divided <strong>in</strong>to <strong>two</strong> unerpial<br />

portions by <strong>the</strong> Sumida Kiver, and over this river is <strong>the</strong> Nihon Baslii, or<br />

VIEW OF TOKIO, FROM THE SOUTH.<br />

Nihon Eridge, which is <strong>of</strong>ten called <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> Japan, for <strong>the</strong> reason<br />

that all <strong>the</strong> roads were formerly measured from it. It has <strong>the</strong> same rela-<br />

tion to Japan as <strong>the</strong> famous "London Stone" has to England, or, ra<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> London Stone had a hundred years ago.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> railway station our <strong>travellers</strong> went to <strong>the</strong> Nihon Bashi, <strong>in</strong><br />

order to beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir journey fi-om <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> empire. A more
