THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

were a proud, lianghty race who resented an <strong>in</strong>sult to <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>in</strong>ce, and<br />

punished it accord<strong>in</strong>g to Jaj^anese law and custom. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong><br />

foreigners had tlie technical right, <strong>in</strong> accordance with tlie treaty, to go<br />

Tipon <strong>the</strong> Tokaido ;<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>fered a direct <strong>in</strong>sult to <strong>the</strong> j^uople <strong>in</strong> whose<br />

country <strong>the</strong>y were, and openly showed <strong>the</strong>ir contempt for <strong>the</strong>m. A little<br />

forbearance, and a will<strong>in</strong>gness to avoid trouble by refra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g from visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tohaido, as requested by <strong>the</strong> Japanese anthorities, would have pre-<br />

vented <strong>the</strong> sad occurrence.<br />

As a resnlt <strong>of</strong> this affair, <strong>the</strong> Japanese government was compelled to<br />

pay a hundred thousand pounds sterl<strong>in</strong>g to tlie family <strong>of</strong> Mr. Richardson,<br />

or submit to <strong>the</strong> alternative <strong>of</strong> a war with England. In addition to this,<br />

<strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Kagoshima, <strong>the</strong> residence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Satsuma, was bom-<br />

barded, tlie place reduced to ashes, forts, palaces, factories, thrown <strong>in</strong>to<br />

ru<strong>in</strong>s, and thousands <strong>of</strong> luiild<strong>in</strong>gs set on hre by <strong>the</strong> shells from <strong>the</strong> British<br />

fleet. Three steamers belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Satsuma wore captured,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ce was fur<strong>the</strong>r compelled to pay an additional <strong>in</strong>demnity <strong>of</strong><br />

twenty-five thousand pounds. <strong>The</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> affair has never been<br />

made known by <strong>the</strong> Japanese, but it is certa<strong>in</strong> to have been very great.<br />

It would not be surpris<strong>in</strong>g if <strong>the</strong> Japanese should enterta<strong>in</strong> curious no-<br />

tions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exact character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chri.stian religion, when such acts are<br />

j^erpetrated by <strong>the</strong> nations that pr<strong>of</strong>ess it. <strong>The</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> civilization<br />

have been wafted to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> large proportion from <strong>the</strong> muzzles <strong>of</strong> can-<br />

non ; and <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> Western diplomacy has been, all too frequently, from<br />

<strong>the</strong> torch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cendiary.<br />

But we must not forget our <strong>boy</strong>s <strong>in</strong> our dissertation on <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><br />

foreign <strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>in</strong> Japan. In fact, <strong>the</strong>y were not forgotten <strong>in</strong> it, as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y heard <strong>the</strong> story from <strong>the</strong> Doctor's lips, and heard a great deal more<br />

l)esides. <strong>The</strong> Doctor summarized his op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong> Japanese<br />

had been treated by foreigners somewhat as follows :<br />

" <strong>The</strong> Japanese had been exclusive for a long time, and wished to con-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ue so. Tlie}^ had had an experience <strong>of</strong> foreign relations <strong>two</strong> hundred<br />

years ago, and <strong>the</strong> )-esult had well-nigh cost <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dependence. It<br />

was unsatisfactory, and <strong>the</strong>y chose to shut <strong>the</strong>mselves up and live alone.<br />

If we wanted to shnt up <strong>the</strong> United States, and admit no foreigners<br />

among us, we should consider it a matter <strong>of</strong> great rudeness if <strong>the</strong>y forced<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong>, and tlireatened to bombard us when we refused <strong>the</strong>m ad-<br />

mittance. We were <strong>the</strong> first to poke our noses <strong>in</strong>to Japan, wlien we sent<br />

Commodore Perry here with a fleet. <strong>The</strong> Japanese tried <strong>the</strong>ir best to<br />

<strong>in</strong>duce us to go away and let <strong>the</strong>m alone, Init we M'ouldn't go. We stood<br />

<strong>the</strong>re with <strong>the</strong> copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> treaty <strong>in</strong> one hand, and had tlie o<strong>the</strong>r rest<strong>in</strong>g
