<strong>the</strong> wars between Holland and otlier countries, <strong>the</strong>re were several years<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r when no ship came. <strong>The</strong>y were permitted to purchase certa<strong>in</strong><br />

quantities <strong>of</strong> fresh provisions daily, and when <strong>the</strong>y ran short <strong>of</strong> needed ar-<br />

ticles <strong>the</strong>y were supplied by <strong>the</strong> governor <strong>of</strong> JN^agasaki. But no permission<br />

could be granted to go outside <strong>the</strong>ir narrow limits. How <strong>the</strong>y must have<br />

sighed as tliey gazed on <strong>the</strong> green hills opposite, and with what long<strong>in</strong>g<br />

did <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> a ramble on those grassy or wooded slopes<br />

<strong>The</strong> chief use <strong>of</strong> Deshima, as our friends found it, is to serve as a de-<br />

pository <strong>of</strong> Japanese wares, and particularly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>ds for which Naga-<br />

saki is famous. Nagasaki vases and Nagasaki lacquer were <strong>in</strong> such quan-<br />

tities as to be absolutely bewilder<strong>in</strong>g, and for once <strong>the</strong>y found <strong>the</strong> prices<br />

lower than at Yokohama. <strong>The</strong>y made a few purchases—<strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al transac-<br />

tions <strong>in</strong> Japan—and <strong>the</strong>n turned <strong>the</strong>ir attention to a stroll through <strong>the</strong> city.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was not much to amuse <strong>the</strong>m after <strong>the</strong>ir acqua<strong>in</strong>tance with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

cities <strong>of</strong> Japan, and so <strong>the</strong>y were speedily satisfied. On <strong>the</strong> hill overlook-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> town and harbor <strong>the</strong>y found an old temple <strong>of</strong> considerable magnitude,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n ano<strong>the</strong>r, and ano<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong>n tca-luuises almost withoiit num-<br />

ber. In one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>the</strong>y sat and studied <strong>the</strong> scenery <strong>of</strong> Nagasaki<br />

until even<strong>in</strong>g, when <strong>the</strong>y returned to <strong>the</strong> steamer.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r ramble on shore <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>the</strong> soil<br />
