fifty cents a day, and his expenses, and said lie was I'em<strong>in</strong>ded <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ex-<br />

cuse <strong>of</strong> a soldier M'ho was be<strong>in</strong>g censured for drunkenness.<br />

" What was that ?" queried Frank.<br />

" His capta<strong>in</strong> asked him what he had to say for himself to escape pun-<br />

ishment, and <strong>the</strong> man replied that it was unreasonable to expect all tlie<br />

card<strong>in</strong>al virtues for thirteen dollars a month. <strong>The</strong> capta<strong>in</strong> told him <strong>the</strong><br />

excuse was suflicient for that time, but would not do for a repetition <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fence."<br />

<strong>The</strong>y had not been five m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hotel before <strong>the</strong>y were visited<br />

by a delegation <strong>of</strong> peddlers, who had all sorts <strong>of</strong> wares to <strong>of</strong>fer. Among<br />

<strong>the</strong>m were some beautiful embroideries on silk, <strong>of</strong> a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>y had not<br />

seen <strong>in</strong> Tokio or Yokohama, and <strong>the</strong>re were some exquisite pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs that<br />

gave practical evidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> superiority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artists <strong>of</strong> Kioto. <strong>The</strong><br />

dealers were not at all importunate, and did not seem to care whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

strangers purchased <strong>the</strong>ir wares or decl<strong>in</strong>ed all negotiations. Two or<br />

three <strong>of</strong> tliem had bi'ought photographs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scenery around Kioto<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>fered to leave for <strong>in</strong>spection until <strong>the</strong> next day. This pro-<br />

posal was received with favor, and on a h<strong>in</strong>t that <strong>the</strong> <strong>travellers</strong> were tired<br />

and wished to be by <strong>the</strong>mselves, each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> it<strong>in</strong>erant merchants retired,<br />

but not till after bow<strong>in</strong>g low and pronounc<strong>in</strong>g a respectful " Sayonara."<br />

Two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hotels which <strong>the</strong> foreigners patronize are close to some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> famous temples <strong>of</strong> Kioto, and thus <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> sight-see<strong>in</strong>g is great-<br />

ly facilitated. A third hotel is a considerable distance up <strong>the</strong> hill-side,<br />

and commands a f<strong>in</strong>e view over nearly all <strong>the</strong> city. <strong>The</strong> ascent to it is<br />

somewhat fatigu<strong>in</strong>g, but <strong>the</strong> visitor is well paid for <strong>the</strong> exertion by <strong>the</strong><br />

remarkable and charm<strong>in</strong>g landscape that spreads before his eyes.
