<strong>the</strong> little people happy bj' expend<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> Doctor<br />

gave his approval ; so <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s <strong>in</strong>vested a sum erpial to about tweut}'<br />

cents <strong>of</strong> our money, and were astonished at <strong>the</strong> num-<br />

ber <strong>of</strong> dolls <strong>the</strong>y were able to procure for <strong>the</strong>ir out-<br />

lay. <strong>The</strong> little Japs were delighted, and danced<br />

around <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir glee, just as any children might<br />

liave done <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r, country. A few paces away<br />

some <strong>boy</strong>s were endeavor<strong>in</strong>g to walk on bamboo<br />

poles, and evidently <strong>the</strong>y were hav<strong>in</strong>g a jolly time,<br />

to judge by <strong>the</strong>ir laughter. Two <strong>boy</strong>s were hang-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong>ir hands from a pole, and endeavor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to turn somersets ; while <strong>two</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs were trj'-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g to walk on a pole close by <strong>the</strong>m. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

walkers fell <strong>of</strong>f, and was laughed at by his compan-<br />

ions ;<br />

but he was speedily up aga<strong>in</strong>, determ<strong>in</strong>ed not<br />

to give np till he had accomplished his task.<br />

Japanese children are well supplied with dolls<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r playth<strong>in</strong>gs, and <strong>the</strong>re are certa<strong>in</strong> festivals<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> whole family devotes itself to <strong>the</strong> prep-<br />

aration or purchase <strong>of</strong> dolls to amuse <strong>the</strong> little<br />

ones. <strong>The</strong> greatest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se festivals is known as<br />

<strong>the</strong> " H<strong>in</strong>a Matsuri," or Feast <strong>of</strong> Dolls, hiria mean-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g doll, and matsuri be<strong>in</strong>g applicable to any k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>of</strong> feast. It occurs on <strong>the</strong> third day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third<br />

month, and for several days before <strong>the</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

time <strong>the</strong> shops are filled with dolls just as <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

filled among ns at Christmas. In fact, <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

biis<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> this l<strong>in</strong>e is transacted at this period, and<br />

at o<strong>the</strong>r times it is next to impossible to procure <strong>the</strong><br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs that are so abundant at <strong>the</strong> Matsuri. Every<br />

family that can afford <strong>the</strong> outlay buys a Cjuantity<br />

<strong>of</strong> images made <strong>of</strong> wood or enamelled cla}^, and<br />

dressed to represent varions imperial, nolJe, or<br />

mythological characters, ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present time<br />

or <strong>of</strong> some former period <strong>in</strong> Japanese history. In<br />

this way <strong>the</strong> children are tanght a ffood deal <strong>of</strong> his- 'T' "i X'^S*"**<br />

tory, and <strong>the</strong>ir delight at <strong>the</strong> receipt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pres-<br />

ents is quite equal to that <strong>of</strong> children <strong>in</strong> Christian lands. Not only<br />

dolls, bnt a great variety <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs, are given to <strong>the</strong> girls ; for <strong>the</strong><br />
