THE BUY TRAVELLERS.<br />

and only missed his mark by a conple <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ches. Yon see that tiie dumb<br />

animals were not disposed to welcome us l)ospitably. <strong>The</strong>y were evidently<br />

put np to <strong>the</strong>ir conduct by <strong>the</strong>ir masters, who do not like <strong>the</strong> strangers<br />

any more than <strong>the</strong> dogs and cats do, and are only prevented from sliow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir spite by <strong>the</strong> fear that <strong>the</strong> foreigners will blow <strong>the</strong>ir towns out <strong>of</strong> ex-<br />

istence if any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are <strong>in</strong>jured.<br />

"We bought some th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shops, but <strong>the</strong>y did not amount to<br />

much ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> cost or cpiality. Fred found a pair <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese spectacles<br />

CHINKSE SPECTACLES.<br />

with a smoky t<strong>in</strong>t so as to reduce <strong>the</strong> glare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun.<br />

which he paid half a dollar for;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were big round th<strong>in</strong>gs, with<br />

glasses nearly as large as a silver<br />

dollar, and looked ver}- comical<br />

when put on. But I am told<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y are very comfortaljle<br />

to <strong>the</strong> eyes, and that tlie foreign-<br />

ers wlio live <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, and have<br />

occasion to wear spectacles, gen-<br />

erall}' prefer those made by tiie<br />

Cli<strong>in</strong>ese opticians. A pair <strong>of</strong><br />

really t<strong>in</strong>e pebbles will cost from<br />

ten to twenty dollars. <strong>The</strong> glass-<br />

es that Fred bought were only <strong>the</strong><br />

commonest k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> stuff, colored<br />

" We went outside <strong>the</strong> town, and found ourselves suddenly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

country. It was a complete change. Go<strong>in</strong>g through a gate <strong>in</strong> a wall took<br />

us from <strong>the</strong> streets to <strong>the</strong> fields, and go<strong>in</strong>g back through <strong>the</strong> gate took us<br />

to <strong>the</strong> streets aga<strong>in</strong>. We saw a man plough<strong>in</strong>g with a plough that liad<br />

only one handle, and made a furrow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground about as large as if he<br />

had dragged a pickaxe through it. <strong>The</strong> plough was pulled by a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

buffalo about as large as a <strong>two</strong>-year-old steer, and he was guided by means<br />

<strong>of</strong> a cord drawn through <strong>the</strong> cartilage <strong>of</strong> his nose. It was a poor outfit<br />

for a farmer ; but <strong>the</strong> man who had it appeared perfectly contented, and<br />

did not once turn his eyes from his work to look at us.<br />

" A little way <strong>of</strong>f from this ploughman <strong>the</strong>re was a man thresh<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gra<strong>in</strong> on some slats ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y looked like a small ladder placed on an <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> way he did <strong>the</strong> work was to take a handful <strong>of</strong> gra<strong>in</strong> and thresli it<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> slats till he liad knocked out all <strong>the</strong> kernels and left noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

liut <strong>the</strong> straw. Such a til<strong>in</strong>g as a thresh<strong>in</strong>g-mach<strong>in</strong>e would astonish <strong>the</strong>m<br />

ycrj much, I should th<strong>in</strong>k, and I don't believe <strong>the</strong>y would allow it to run.
