<strong>The</strong>re were men cha<strong>in</strong>ed, with iron collars around <strong>the</strong>ir necks ; and o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

tied, with <strong>the</strong>ir hands and feet brought close toge<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

terrible, and M'e were glad to couie away after a very few m<strong>in</strong>utes. It is<br />

positive that we do not want to see ano<strong>the</strong>r prison as long as we stay <strong>in</strong><br />

this country.<br />

''In <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese prisons <strong>the</strong>y torture men to make <strong>the</strong>m confess, and<br />

also to compel <strong>the</strong>m to tell if <strong>the</strong>y have money, or any relatives or friends<br />

who have it. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cruelties is called 'putt<strong>in</strong>g a man to bed,' and<br />

consists <strong>in</strong> fasten<strong>in</strong>g him on a wooden bedstead by his neck, wi-ists, and<br />

more oppressive. <strong>The</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g he is released and told that he can<br />

be free until night, when he will be aga<strong>in</strong> tied up. Generally a man is<br />

will<strong>in</strong>g to do anyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his power ra<strong>the</strong>r than pass a second night on<br />

such a bed. If he has mone}', he gives it up ; and, no matter how reluc-<br />

tant he may be to call on his friends, he does so, sooner or later, and throws<br />

himself on <strong>the</strong>ir generosity.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>y suspend men by <strong>the</strong> wrists and ankles ; sometimes by one wrist<br />

and one ankle, and at o<strong>the</strong>rs by all four brought closely toge<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>The</strong>n<br />

<strong>the</strong>y place a victim <strong>in</strong> a chair with his arms tied to cross-sticks, and <strong>in</strong> this<br />

position he is compelled to sit for hours <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> most terrible pa<strong>in</strong>. An-<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r mode is by ty<strong>in</strong>g a man's hands toge<strong>the</strong>r beneath his knees, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

jjass<strong>in</strong>g a polo under his arm and susjjend<strong>in</strong>g him from it. This is called<br />

'<strong>the</strong> monkey grasp<strong>in</strong>g a peach,' and it is frequently employed to compel a<br />

rich man to pay heavily to escajje punishment. How it got its name no-<br />

body can tell, unless it was ow<strong>in</strong>g to a supposed resemblance to <strong>the</strong> posi-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> a monkey hold<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his paw.<br />

" Just as we were com<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prison-yard wo saw a man stand-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a cage with his head through a board <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> top, while his toes just<br />

touched <strong>the</strong> bottom. Unless he stood on tiptoe, <strong>the</strong> weight <strong>of</strong> his body<br />

fell on his neck ; and evei-ybody knows how difficult it is to rema<strong>in</strong> on
