while he narrated his whal<strong>in</strong>g experiences. lie expla<strong>in</strong>ed that he could<br />

talk better <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> his old spy-glass, as it would rem<strong>in</strong>d him<br />

<strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs he might forget without its aid, and also check him if he went<br />

beyond <strong>the</strong> truth.<br />

made fortunes for a good many men ;<br />

" I went to sea from New Bedford when I was twelve years old, and<br />

crept up through all <strong>the</strong> ranks, till I became capta<strong>in</strong> and part owner, and<br />
