THE BOY TKAVELLEES.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Doctor told <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s that <strong>the</strong> Mitsu Bislii Company, as this Jap-<br />

anese organization was called, was <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g ever}' year <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> its<br />

ships. It received assistance from <strong>the</strong> government <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a mail<br />

contract, and was evidently do<strong>in</strong>g very well. <strong>The</strong> steamers ran once a<br />

week each way between Yokohama and Shanghai, touch<strong>in</strong>g at Kobe and<br />

]S^agasaki, and <strong>the</strong>re were l<strong>in</strong>es to o<strong>the</strong>r ports <strong>of</strong> Japan. <strong>The</strong> Japanese<br />

were study<strong>in</strong>g naval architecture and mak<strong>in</strong>g good progress, and <strong>the</strong>y hoped<br />

before many years to construct <strong>the</strong>ir own ships. Every year <strong>the</strong>y reduced<br />

<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> foreigners <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir service, and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir establishments<br />

M'ere entirely under native management.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second morn<strong>in</strong>g after leav<strong>in</strong>g Yokohama, tliey were at Kobe, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> steamer anchored <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> town. Kobe and Pliogo are practically one<br />

HIOGO (koBE).<br />

and <strong>the</strong> same place.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Japanese city that<br />

stands <strong>the</strong>re was for-<br />

merly known as Hio-<br />

- go, and still reta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

that name, while <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> Kobe was ap-<br />

plied to that portion<br />

where <strong>the</strong> foreigners<br />

reside. <strong>The</strong> view from<br />

<strong>the</strong> wateris quite pret-<br />

ty, as <strong>the</strong>re is a l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s just back<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city ; and as<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s looked <strong>in</strong>-<br />

tently <strong>the</strong>y could see<br />

that <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s were <strong>in</strong>halnted. <strong>The</strong>re are several neat little houses<br />

on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hills, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> residences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foreigners who<br />

go <strong>the</strong>re to get <strong>the</strong> cool air, while <strong>the</strong> rest are <strong>the</strong> homes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Japanese.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a liberal allowance <strong>of</strong> teadiouses where <strong>the</strong> public can go to be<br />

refreshed, and <strong>the</strong>re is a waterfall where a mounta<strong>in</strong> stream comes rattl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

down from <strong>the</strong> rocks to a deep pool, where groups <strong>of</strong> ba<strong>the</strong>rs are sure to<br />

congregate <strong>in</strong> t<strong>in</strong>e wea<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> town stands on a level pla<strong>in</strong>, where a<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t juts <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> water, and <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g remarkable about it. If<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had not seen Yokohama and Tokio, <strong>the</strong>y might have found it <strong>in</strong>-<br />

terest<strong>in</strong>g; but after those cities <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s were not long <strong>in</strong> agree<strong>in</strong>g that a<br />

short time <strong>in</strong> Kobe would be all <strong>the</strong>y would wish.<br />

But tliey were at <strong>the</strong> port <strong>of</strong> Osaka and Kioto, and <strong>the</strong>ir thoughts were
