THE BOY TRAVELLEKS.<br />

" We have seen such lots <strong>of</strong> til<strong>in</strong>gs to-da}'—lots and lots. I can't beg<strong>in</strong><br />

to tell 3'ou all <strong>in</strong> this letter, and <strong>the</strong>re is so much that I don't know<br />

where to commence. Well, we went <strong>in</strong>to some shops and looked at <strong>the</strong><br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>y had to sell, but didn't buy anyth<strong>in</strong>g, as we thought it was too<br />

soon. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shops I liked very much M-as where <strong>the</strong>y sold silk. It<br />

wasn't much like a silk-shop at home, where you sit on a stool <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong><br />

a counter and have <strong>the</strong> clerks spread <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs out before you. In this<br />

shop <strong>the</strong> silk was <strong>in</strong> boxes out <strong>of</strong> sight, and <strong>the</strong>y only showed you wliat<br />

you asked for. <strong>The</strong>re was a platform <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shop, and <strong>the</strong><br />

clerks scpiatted down on this platform, and unrolled <strong>the</strong>ir goods. Two<br />

women were <strong>the</strong>re, buj'<strong>in</strong>g some bright-colored stufE, for mak<strong>in</strong>g a dress,<br />

I suppose, but I don't know. One man sat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> corner with a yardstick<br />

ready to measure <strong>of</strong>f what was wanted, and ano<strong>the</strong>r sat close by him look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on to see that everyth<strong>in</strong>g was all right. Back <strong>of</strong> him <strong>the</strong>re were a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

boxes piled up with <strong>the</strong> goods <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m ; and whenever anyth<strong>in</strong>g was wanted,<br />

he passed it out. You should have seen how solemn <strong>the</strong>y all looked, and<br />

how one woman counted on her f<strong>in</strong>gers to see how much it was all com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to, just as folks do at home. In a corner opposite <strong>the</strong> man with <strong>the</strong> yard-<br />

stick <strong>the</strong>re was a man who kept <strong>the</strong> accounts. He was squatted on <strong>the</strong><br />

floor like <strong>the</strong> rest, and had his books all round him ; and when a sale was<br />

made, he put it down <strong>in</strong> figures that I couldn't read <strong>in</strong> a week.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>n it was ever so funny to see <strong>the</strong> men bow<strong>in</strong>g to each o<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>the</strong>}'<br />

did it with so much dignity, as if <strong>the</strong>y had all been pr<strong>in</strong>ces, or someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sort. <strong>The</strong>y rest <strong>the</strong>ir hands 0!i <strong>the</strong>ir knees, and <strong>the</strong>n bend <strong>the</strong><br />

body forward ;<br />

and sometimes <strong>the</strong>y bend so low that <strong>the</strong>ir backs are level<br />
