THE BOY TRAVELLEKS.<br />

Oil a cannon charged to <strong>the</strong> muzzle and ready to tire. We said, ' Take tlie<br />

one or tlie otlier ; sign a treaty <strong>of</strong> peace and good-will and accejJt <strong>the</strong><br />

bless<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> civilization, or we will blow 3'on so high <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air that <strong>the</strong><br />

pieces won't come down for a week.' Japan was conv<strong>in</strong>ced when slie<br />

saw that resistance would be nseless, and Cjuite aga<strong>in</strong>st her wishes she<br />

entered <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> nations. We opened <strong>the</strong> way and <strong>the</strong>n England<br />

followed, and <strong>the</strong>n came <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r nations. We have done less robb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and bully<strong>in</strong>g than England has, <strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>tercourse with Japan, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Japanese like ns better <strong>in</strong> conseqnence. But if it is a correct pr<strong>in</strong>ciple<br />

that no man should bo disturbed so long as he does not disturb any one<br />

else, and does no harm, <strong>the</strong> outside nations had no right to <strong>in</strong>terfere witli<br />

Japan, and compel her to open her territory to <strong>the</strong>m."<br />

This conversation occurred wliile <strong>the</strong>y were halted under some ven-<br />

erable shade-trees by <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tokaido, and were look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

people that passed. Every few m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>the</strong>y saw gronps vary<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

<strong>two</strong> to six or eight persons, very th<strong>in</strong>ly clad, and hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong><br />

wayfarers with a small stock <strong>of</strong> money, or none at all. <strong>The</strong> Doctor ex-<br />

pla<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong>se men were pilgrims on <strong>the</strong>ir way to holy places—some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m were doubtless bound for<br />

Enoshima, some for Ilakone, and<br />

some for <strong>the</strong> great mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

which every now and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

turns <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> road revealed to <strong>the</strong><br />

eyes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>travellers</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se pil-<br />

grimages have a religious charac-<br />

ter, and are made by thousands <strong>of</strong><br />

persons every year. One mem-<br />

small bell, and as <strong>the</strong>y walk along<br />

its fa<strong>in</strong>t t<strong>in</strong>kle gives notice <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir religious character, and prac-<br />

tically warns o<strong>the</strong>rs that <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

not commercially <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed, as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are without more money than is<br />

actually needed for <strong>the</strong> purposes<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir journey. <strong>The</strong>y wear broad hats to protect <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> sun,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir garments, usually <strong>of</strong> white material, are stamped with mystic<br />

characters to symbolize tlie particular div<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong> whose honor <strong>the</strong> journey<br />

is made.<br />
