THE BOY TRAVEI>LE1!S.<br />

plumlered all <strong>the</strong> native passengers, and got away. Some <strong>of</strong> tlie<strong>in</strong> -n-ere<br />

afterwards captured, and confessed to <strong>the</strong>ir part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> affair, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

whole story came out that <strong>the</strong>y liad <strong>in</strong>tended to rol) this boat. S<strong>in</strong>ce tlien<br />

we always have tlie grat<strong>in</strong>gs down, so tliat <strong>the</strong> third-class passengers can-<br />

not come on deck ;<br />

and we keep plenty <strong>of</strong> rifles and revolvers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pilot-<br />

house and capta<strong>in</strong>'s cab<strong>in</strong> ready for use. <strong>The</strong>y may never try it on us<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>, and we don't <strong>in</strong>tend to give <strong>the</strong>m a chance to do so.''<br />

FORT IN CANTON RIVER.<br />

<strong>The</strong> capta<strong>in</strong> went on to say that <strong>the</strong>re were many pii'atos <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

waters around Canton, and all along <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>i'n coast. <strong>The</strong> government<br />

tries to suppress <strong>the</strong>m, but it is not easy to do so, and hardly a day<br />

passes without <strong>the</strong> report <strong>of</strong> a robbery somewhere. All trad<strong>in</strong>g-junks are<br />

obliged to go heavily armed, and out <strong>of</strong> this fact comes a great deal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pii-acv, as a junk may lie a peaceful trader at one o'clock, a pirate at <strong>two</strong>,<br />

and a peaceful trader aga<strong>in</strong> at three. It takes very little to <strong>in</strong>duce a<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese capta<strong>in</strong> to turn pii-ate when he sees a rich prize before him, and<br />

he has no trouble <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g over his crew. It is impossible to distiii-<br />

amish <strong>the</strong> pirate from <strong>the</strong> trader ; and as <strong>the</strong> coast is seamed with island<br />

passages and <strong>in</strong>dented with bays, it is easy for a junk to escape after she<br />

has committed a robber^'.
