THE BOY TRAVELLERS.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Doctor took from his pocket some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> co<strong>in</strong> which was <strong>in</strong> circu-<br />

lation, and with which <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s had by this time become thoroughly<br />

familiar. <strong>The</strong>y had I'emarked that it was as neatly made as any co<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Europe or America, and, as a matter <strong>of</strong> curiosity, <strong>the</strong>y were desirous <strong>of</strong><br />

see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e by which each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different pieces was stamped.<br />

<strong>The</strong> director k<strong>in</strong>dly po<strong>in</strong>t-<br />

ed out <strong>the</strong> various ma-<br />

ch<strong>in</strong>es, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>boy</strong>s ob-<br />

served that, with a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

exception, <strong>the</strong>y were all <strong>of</strong><br />

Japanese make. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were shown through a fac-<br />

tory for <strong>the</strong> manufacture<br />

<strong>of</strong> sulphuric acid that is<br />

attached to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>t, and<br />

is run on government ac-<br />

count. <strong>The</strong>y were some-<br />

what astonished to learn<br />

that all <strong>the</strong> sulphuric acid<br />

nsed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>t was made<br />

<strong>the</strong>re, and that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pre-<br />

vious year thirteen thou-<br />

sand cases were exported<br />

to Ch<strong>in</strong>a. For <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> chemistry, Fred made <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g memorandum concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> branch <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess he was <strong>in</strong>ves-<br />

tigat<strong>in</strong>g :<br />

VIGNDTTE FRCJM THE NATIONAL BANK-NOTES.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> sulphur comes from <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Satsuma and Bungo—<strong>the</strong><br />

most from <strong>the</strong> latter, and <strong>the</strong> best from <strong>the</strong> former ; and <strong>the</strong> product is<br />

partly for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>t, and partly for general commerce. <strong>The</strong><br />

acid is packed <strong>in</strong> ear<strong>the</strong>n jars which are glazed on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side, and not <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> earboj'S that are <strong>in</strong> use with us. Two jars, hold<strong>in</strong>g about eight quarts<br />

each, are packed <strong>in</strong> a wooden case ; <strong>the</strong>y rest on a bed <strong>of</strong> lime about three<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches tliick, and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> space is filled with coarse ashes and<br />

coal c<strong>in</strong>ders. This manner <strong>of</strong> pack<strong>in</strong>g is considered preferable to <strong>the</strong> old<br />

one, and, besides, it enables <strong>the</strong> Japanese to make <strong>the</strong>ir own jars, <strong>in</strong>stead<br />

<strong>of</strong> import<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> car<strong>boy</strong>s. <strong>The</strong> director tells me that thus far <strong>the</strong> factor}-<br />

has not been able to supply <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese demand for acid, and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

uu shipments have been made to o<strong>the</strong>r countries. With an <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

production, it is quite possible that shipments may be made to America<br />

at no very distant day.
