also began within me a new Spring, new<br />

flowers put forth their buds in my heart,<br />

the sense of freedom, like a rose, sprang<br />

up, and tender longings too, like newborn<br />

violets, and among them truly<br />

many a weed. Over the graves of dead<br />

wishes hope spread her smiling mantle<br />

of green, melodies of poesy also returned<br />

like birds of passage which, having<br />

spent the winter in the warm south, now<br />

sought again their forsaken northern<br />

nests, and my forlorn northern heart rejoiced<br />

and blossomed as before, only I<br />

knew not how it all came about. Was it<br />

a dusky or a fair complexioned sun that<br />

again awakened Spring in my heart, and<br />

kissed away the sleep of the flowers,<br />

and with its smiles brought back the<br />

nightingales ? Was it nature herself<br />

which sought an echo in my bosom, to<br />

gaze therein, as in a mirror, at her own<br />

new beauty of Spring-time ?<br />
