MARTYR OF MONTMARTRE<br />

THE years after the ascent of Queen Victoria<br />

to the throne of England witnessed a constant<br />

increase in Heine's influence upon English thought<br />

and English letters. The vituperation heaped upon<br />

him by the pre-Victorian publicists continued to<br />

some extent throughout the succeeding decades,<br />

but there was mingled with all the bitter reproaches<br />

about his malign influence a definite admiration for<br />

his talent as a poet and his brilliance as a wit.<br />

There were three distinct avenues through which<br />

Heine's influence made itself felt. In the first place,<br />

there were the English reviews and English translations,<br />

which increased in number and in depth<br />

of insight from year to year. In the second place,<br />

there were Englishmen, such as George Meredith<br />

and Julian Fane, who studied or travelled in Germany<br />

at a time when Heine's literary star was in<br />

the ascendancy and his songs were captivating the<br />
