A complete list of English studies, translations, articles, reviews,
and references, centering about Heine, would run into
thousands of items and would be of less value than a critical
selection of the more important publications which helped to
shape the English legend of Heine and which are therefore
discussed in the text. German editions and standard biographies
of the poet generally contain excellent bibliographies.
