THE RENAISSANCE.
At the time of the reformation. Catholic
poetry was gradually dying out in
Europe, and in its place we behold the
long-buried Grecian style of poetry
again reviving. It was, in sooth, only
an artificial spring, the work of the
gardener and not of the sun ; the trees
and flowers were stuck in narrow pots,
and a glass sky protected them from the
wind and cold weather.
MIND AND MATTER.
Alas ! mental torture is easier to be
